Savanah Nabors now taking the stand in the trial for suspended sheriff Will Lewis.
Nabors talking about her time at the Bannister Law Firm. She is visibly upset when Brackett begins asking her about knowing Will Lewis. Says she hadn't met him before that, says she never babysat his kids.
Says when Lewis started talking about running for sheriff and "taking" her with him. She said she wasn't sure if he meant it or not until he filed for campaign. Says she was not involved in the campaign. Says she does not generally follow politics.
Says she remembers Lewis calling her when he won. Nabors says she did not vote in the election for sheriff at the time. Said by that time she had went to work for DSS. Says she didn't take him seriously until the day he won. Says she wanted more on the job description.
Says she asked for an official salary and job description email. Says Lewis said he wanted her "two steps beside him, two steps behind him." Says she went to work for him around Sept or October 2016. Says he promised to double her salary to $62K.
Nabors says at the time she didn't have any law enforcement experience. Says during transition she would be part of command staff meetings. Says this happened in different offices because Lewis didn't have one yet. Says Lewis gave her a cell phone to have on her "at all times."
Nabors says Lewis had a private induction ceremony at the Poinsett Club. Says this was a pretty formal event--like a pretend swearing in. Says the next day Lewis asked her to step into another office, says she thought she was in trouble.
Says he told her that what she was wearing the night before made her look stunning, says he told her she was irreplaceable and that they were going to make a great team.
Now Nabors is talking about how Lewis told her she needed to be open and honest with him about everything going on in her life. She says there was no interview with other candidates for this job.
Nabors confirms her starting pay was $62K. State shows her a salary letter she says this was given to her for help with buying a home that her and her husband were trying to purchase.
Nabors says other benefits included a county vehicle, phone, iPad, desktop computer, and that she would get to do everything he did. This included going with SWAT, press conferences, etc.
Nabors says she had her own parking spot at the LEC. Says she was the third parking spot, and at the time she did not find this odd. Says Lewis also had her fitted for a bulletproof vest and tactical boots.
"It was exciting, it was fun. I thought it was going to be the best job ever." Nabors describes the first 6 weeks of her job with Lewis.
Nabors taking some every deep breaths on the stand clearly trying to keep herself composed. She is visibly uncomfortable.
Nabors reading a series of texts from Lewis. Many of them happening in the early morning hours concerning heading to crime scenes etc.
Nabors talking about Lewis bringing her to crime scenes. Says he walked her right up to the body asking her if she had ever been that close to a dead body. Says there were PIOs on scene to deal with media.
Says Lewis would text her when he knew her husband was out of town, saying he is in the military. At one point she says she told him she was watching the Bachelor. Says he asked if she was drinking Moscato. Says she assumed it was because that was her drink of choice.
Nabors now testifying to her marital problems. Says she and her husband had agreed to see other people and eventually were headed for divorce. Says job did not contribute to difficulties with her husband. Eventually she told Lewis she was getting separated.
She said she felt like if she didn't tell him and he found out from someone else he wouldn't trust her anymore. When she told Lewis he urged her to get in his car with him to ride to the hospital with him where he was going to see his dad.
Says at this point Lewis told her she was the whole package. Says this was about an hour and a half ordeal. Says then she went to her mother's house. Says Lewis called her around 8 or 9 at night. Says this is the first time Lewis mentioned the out of town budget trip.
Says Lewis asked her if she preferred Charlotte or Atlanta for the trip. She told him she didn't care but that if he needed her there she would be there. Says there was a change in behavior toward her after she told him she was separated.
She says it went from friendly flirting to more than that. Saying he would make comments like "hey cutie" and "I can tell you're going to the gym you have a nice figure." She says they were inappropriate comments that she tried to shrug off.
She talks about another daytime out of town trip to Clemson for a speaking event. Says Lewis said to another sheriff that he should get "a Savanah." That sheriff said he couldn't because it would "get him in trouble."
Says she never had a romantic attraction to Lewis. Says she always saw him as a brotherly or even a fatherly figure. Now we're moving onto the testimony about the trip to Charlotte.
Nabors says Lewis requested that she ride with him to Charlotte. She describes a text exchange between herself and Lewis. She's now reading the chain from evidence, says it shows her address for him to come and get her.
Says Lewis came to pick her up and asked to use the restroom. Says she showed him the guest bathroom and went to grab her bag from the master bedroom. Says Lewis followed her into the bedroom and proceeded to use the master bathroom. Says this was very awkward for her.
Says when they arrived in Charlotte Lewis put a bottle of liquor in her bag. Says Lewis told her he would come and get it from her later.
Nabors says after county administration arrived she, Lewis, and Davenport were at the hotel bar. She says after this they all sat at a table to eat some appetizers and chat. Says she had one drink and Lewis ordered her a second before she finished. Then they went to a pub.
She says at the pub they were basically celebrating Lewis being in office. Says he ordered shots for everyone, estimates two rounds of shots and other drinks. Nabors says she only drinks a couple of glasses of wine a week. She weighs 120 pounds.
Says Lewis offered her a raise and she said no to give it to the officers. Says Lewis told her it was already approved. Nabors says up to this point he had never been angry or harsh with her but says she saw him get angry with others.
Nabors says on the way back to the hotel Lewis tried to pick her up but he was so drunk that he almost fell over. Says once they got back to the hotel they all got in the elevator. Says everyone got off except herself and Lewis.
Says when she got off he said he needed to get the bottle of liquor from her. Says when they got to her room Lewis asked if she wanted a nightcap. She said sure and they both sat down as Lewis started flipping through channels on tv.
Says at one point he started talking about his marriage and that it was failing and that they were in it for the kids. Says Lewis said he didn't really have an intimate partner anymore. Says at some point Lewis came to sit next to her and tried to kiss her.
Says she told him it wasn't a good idea and he started talking about the lack of intimacy and the stress. Says this was a long time and he was talking in circles. She says things started to get fuzzy for her.
She says she remembered Lewis taking off his over shirt. She says she doesn't remember anything until 5 in the morning when she woke up with him on top of her. "He was having sex with me." Nabors is openly crying on the stand now.
Says at this point when she woke up Lewis started to giggle. She can't remember how clothed she was at the time. "He finished what he was doing and said we needed to go back to his room to rest."
Nabors says in the morning she couldn't remember a lot. Says she went back to her room and took a shower and tried to recollect. Nabors is still crying on the stand through her testimony.
"I just tried to put myself back together and figure out what I did wrong." She says at this point she was holding herself responsible for what took place.
Says after this she tried to go to the meeting "like I was supposed to." Said she was trying to "hold it all together." Says she said she believed it was her fault for letting him in her room.
Says she was very confused at this point about what had happened the night before. Says they all took a nap that day before heading out to a fancy Italian restaurant. Says after they went to a bar and that Lewis left the group to go to CVS.
Says everyone was trying to have a good time. Says she was very cautious about what she was drinking this night because she blamed herself for the night before. She says a couple guys at the bar were hitting on her and that Lewis put his hand in her back pocket.
She says the group continued to drink even though she was trying to regulate what she was drinking. Says after that they went to some type of dance club. Says after that they went back to the hotel. Says she had some drinks but that she was fine.
Says Lewis tried to distance himself and Nabors from the others in the group on the walk back to the hotel. Says Lewis then pulled lubricant out of his pocket and said "you room or mine." Says she said neither.
Nabors now crying on the stand again saying her dad always told her to be proud of the person in the mirror.
Says Lewis told her he thought the night before would make them work better together. Says she said no again and he started getting angry at her and yelling. She says she left and went back to her room. Then there was a knock on her door.
She says Lewis was there saying he wanted to apologize and promised not to touch her. Says Lewis was talking long winded and was upset and asked to stay and didn't want to be alone. She said she let him stay and he slept in the bed next to her.
Says she woke up to his fingers inside her. And she said "see that's why I asked you not to say." Says she doesn't remember his response.
Says on the way back to Greenville from Charlotte Lewis said "what happens in Charlotte stays in Charlotte."
Nabors saying every time she tried to turn Lewis down he got angry with her. Says at one point she told him to go home to his wife and he said he didn't want to do that. Said work after that was "hostile."
Says at one point she was home sick and Lewis came over with medicine and soup. Says he picked her up and brought her to her bed and tucked her in "like a child." Then she asked him to leave.
Nabors now talking about Lewis loaning her a pressure washer. Said she left and arranged with neighbors to let him in to pick it up while she left to run errands. Says she was getting a bite to eat and she looked in her mirror and he was behind her.
She says this is the point where her sister called and could tell something was wrong. So she told her what was happening. At this point Lewis was following her home. She decided at this point to start recording their conversations.
Prosecution is about to play the recordings. We heard these last week during a suppression hearing. There will be a short break before they are played. 10 to 15 minute break.
