How many more people will have to suffer and die because of this unethical, immoral, senseless laws? Our patient, an elderly woman suffering from 2 forms of cancer had vital #NHS treatment delayed for months because she couldn’t pay £150,000 upfront 1/14 theguardian.com/society/2019/d…
She came to the UK to be with her family, who are British citizens. Once she arrived, she was diagnosed with two cancers. Her care was delayed for months and now doctors say her care can only be life extending, not lifesaving. 2/14
Her care should never have been withheld. Safeguards are meant to protect patients in need of urgent and immediate care from having their treatment delayed. But once more, #NHS charging laws smothered all safeguards and caused serious harm to a patient. 3/14
The @DHSCgovuk must scrap the deadly #NHS charging rules. They cause patients serious harm, they are unethical, immoral, and do not work. #PatientsNotPassports 4/14
.@AnnaK_Miller policy&advocacy manager said “This is a tragic example of how the charging rules are causing serious harm to patients in desperate need of care, & it is not an isolated case. In the last 6 months our caseworkers supported 18 people who had treatment withheld” 5/14
“Every child, woman and man in the UK should get the medical care they need, or lives are at risk. That is one of the main principles of the NHS, it’s what makes our health system one of the best in the world, and we should be proud of that” @AnnaK_Miller told @ObserverUK 6/14
.@DrJohnChisholm @BMA “A doctor is first and foremost a caregiver, not a border guard, and none of us should ever be expected to determine whether someone is eligible for urgent care based on their background or status. We are there to treat people on the basis of medical need”
The #HostileEnvironment has infiltrated healthcare and caused harm to many patients. Many hospitals are struggling to apply these laws. We’ve seen many of these cases, and so has the @DHSCgovuk 8/14
Nasar was denied a life-saving transplant because he couldn’t afford to pay for it up-front and was then ordered to pay £32,000 for end of life care @batesej 9/14 metro.co.uk/2019/01/19/my-…
This is the human cost and suffering behind the #NHS charging regulations. @BMA @RCPLondon@RCObsGyn and many others have condemned these deadly laws and asked @DHSCgovuk to suspend them. 12/14
The @BMA has reported that many doctors faced pressures from administrative staff when making clinical judgements about patients’ need for care. 13/14 bma.org.uk/news/media-cen…

COVID-19 has shone a light on why a truly universal NHS is vital. We cannot have members of our community too scared or unable to access the healthcare that could prevent serious harm and save their lives #HealthForAll
COVID-19 does not discriminate. Yet nearly two years on since the beginning of the pandemic, too many people are still being excluded from NHS services.
A health system that leaves the most vulnerable groups at risk is a health system in crisis. #HealthForAll
This is why DOTW has produced translated resources on COVID-19, and much more, in over 60 languages. We believe that no one should be denied access to vital healthcare information #HealthForAlldoctorsoftheworld.org.uk/translated-hea…
Following #UHCDay, we are talking this week about #HealthForAll and what DOTW does to work towards a truly universal health service.
Did you know that DOTW offers specialist support for women, children, and families through a weekly dedicated service?
We do this because refugee and migrant women face a higher risk of domestic and sexual violence throughout their lives, and this has a detrimental impact on their health #HealthForAll birmingham.ac.uk/Documents/coll…
More than 90% of the women DOTW supports have no access to healthcare due to a range of factors including the impact of poverty, the hostile environment and fear of accessing services, homelessness, chaotic living situations, and language barriers #HealthForAll
Following #UHCDay and as part of our week looking at Universal Health Coverage, what it means, and how we work towards it, today we are sharing work we have done to improve access to information on COVID-19 and the vaccine #HealthForAll
Since the beginning of the pandemic, DOTW has worked to improve access to COVID services, including the vaccines for people who have historically being excluded from mainstream healthcare services #HealthForAll
We are only safe when we are all safe.
That’s why we created an information hub, which has been visited more than 15k times so far. It contains internal and external resources that have been downloaded more than 80k times doctorsoftheworld.org.uk/what-we-stand-…#HealthForAll
Breaking news: Doctors of the World UK is today intervening in an important case at the High Court, on denying healthcare to people living in the UK without immigration status.
Our Head of Policy and Advocacy, Anna Miller, and Head of Services, Amardeep Kamboz are at the High Court. DOTW are represented by @BhattMurphy@DoughtyStPublic and @Landmark_LC.
DOTW has been granted permission to intervene in this judicial review that challenges the lawfulness of an NHS Trust’s decision to deny scheduled haemodialysis under the NHS (Charging of Overseas Visitors) Regulations 2017.
Hi, I’m @NikkiKF, a GP & NHS England’s Director of Primary Care. 👋
I can't wait to take you on my virtual @LondonMarathon! Over the next 3 days, I'll be sharing regular updates as I walk 60 miles from London to Newbury.
My destination: Greenham Common, where my dad spent 6mths in a refugee camp in 1972.
I'm doing this walk for @DOTW_UK, a medical charity that helps refugees & other excluded groups to access healthcare.
Together, we can raise funds & awareness for this great cause!#The40thRace
@DOTW_UK is a medical charity that helps vulnerable people to access healthcare through its:
👩⚕️ UK clinics

This is the desperate situation facing refugee families trapped on Lesvos. 👇
The govt has provided temp housing to some of the over 12k people displaced by fires at #MoriaCamp.
But at least 5k people remain stranded on the street without proper shelter & winter is coming.
There are many vulnerable people on the island – pregnant women, positive or suspected #COVID19 cases, people with chronic health conditions, & people who’ve experienced trauma.
Ensuring those in immediate need of assistance get medical care is a priority for our team on Lesvos.
But their job hasn't been made easy.
Our staff have repeatedly been denied access to Moria camp, as well as the overflow site, Kara Tepe, so have been forced to examine patients on the road.
