Good lord. What a ridiculous piece. Apparently Keir Starmer was a judge while he was Director of Public Prosecutions.

How does this #FakeLaw get past a subeditor?
Also today I’ve learned that the DPP has the power to set prison sentences. Who knew?
Quite how the Code for Crown Prosecutors can be said to “lean towards protecting the British state” is also an intriguing mystery.
I hold no particular torch for Keir Starmer, and have been critical of some of his actions when DPP. But if you’re going to attempt a legal takedown, is it too much to ask that you actually get the law right?
Other highlights (courtesy of @legalclaret) include blaming Starmer for a decision in 2009 not to prosecute the police officers who killed Jean Charles de Menezes. This decision was actually taken in 2006. By a different Director of Public Prosecutions (Sir Ken Macdonald).
And Starmer’s refusal to prosecute the police officer who “killed” Ian Tomlinson? Hard to reconcile with this prosecution of said police officer for manslaughter and his acquittal by a jury in 2012. theguardian.com/uk/2012/jul/19…

I don’t usually care for subtweets, but it is a fact that the very worst kind of person is the one who forces you to get up early on Saturday so that “we” can do Park Run and then refuses to get out of bed leaving you to chug around a frozen field on your own.
It is almost - almost - egregious enough to justify waiving 4 years of anonymity and instigating a 300k-follower Twitter pile-on.

All purely hypothetical, of course.
A certain person has now seen this tweet. Their only comment: “Parkrun is one word.”

Not a flicker of contrition.

Gutter journalism. #FakeLaw from beginning to end.

1. Khan was not “given £350,000”. This is a lie. That was the overall cost of legal aid in his criminal proceedings in 2012. This is like saying someone who receives a NHS heart transplant is “given” the cost of the operation.
2. Readers are invited to conclude that £350,000 is too much to spend on this case. The journalist has not bothered to tell you any of the context that you would need to even *begin* to assess whether that cost is too high, too low, or about right. Such as...
3. How much of that figure includes VAT, which goes to the Treasury? How many lawyers & support staff worked on the case? What work was involved? How many hours, days, months went into this extremely serious case where the defendants were looking at potential life sentences?

This seems a formality - after all, if the specialist CPS appeals unit are fine with this (sensible) approach that should be enough
