Seeing Farage's hollow partying makes me want to quote Max Liebermann „I cannot eat as much as I would like to vomit." Also happened end of January, actually.
Two amazing, utterly EU-ish things about Brexit: splitting off from a polity without bloodshed. And: EU is completely free will-based. Unlike in a federation - or in the USSR, see "EUSSR"- nobody is obliged to join or to stay. 1/
Still: one of the worst political decisions since 1914 in Europe. Discredits referenda, will stay a textbook example along the 21st century of a non-informed, irrational, wrong political decision. 2/
The vote was the parody of democracy: no informed media, no quorums (turn-out, 2/3 or 3/4 threshold) for such a fundamental decisions, no double-check of the majorities by re-asking voters. 3/
The people spoke? With 17.4 million against 16.1 million in 2016, it is hardly the demos that spoke. That was not even mumbling. 4/
Stacey and Tracey (!) interviewed on BBC babble of „we will have a lot more control“ - and are unable to explain how Brexit will change their lives. Depressing testimony of the mindset of pro-Brexit people 5/
People who cheer today will be held responsible by future generations of Brits: how could you do this to us, what were you thinking? 6/
Also true: this is the end of a huge misunderstanding. UK politicians never told their people frankly that EU is more than just a market. A major failure of the British elite who was pro-EU mainly in speeches abroad. 7/
They never really arrived in the EU, there are also lots of things that will be easier without UK governments and their „red tape“. 8/
An FTA by the end of 2020 is completely impossible: will be a mixed agreement, thus needs ratification in all 27 Member States that typically takes something like 2 years alone - add another year if courts get involved. 9/
The harsh reality of being outside will sink in only after the transition period ended. Let’s see whether there still will be partying. Quite likely that those who will suffer most will not be the rich and privileged. Will bring out the worst in people, rise of xenophobia etc. 9/
Our mistake? Not to get involved in the debate in GB enough. „Stay out of their discussions“ was utterly wrong advice. We should have helped explain the truth, the legal and economic implications. 10/
That’s the lesson for current - PL🇵🇱 - and future attempts in Europe to derail the political process and the political system: get involved, don’t let it simply happen because it’s another country. Deeper meaning of Union citizenship = it's not us vs them in these matters 11/
As for UK: They’ll be back. Sooner or later. En bloc as UK, or in bits and parts, Scots first, others following. 12/
