Earlier this week the 10th #DemDebate was held in Charleston, SC, the traditional lands of the Kusso, whose descendants are the Edisto Natchez-Kusso Tribe. The 7 candidates on the debate stage were all white and, as usual, not a single one gave a land acknowledgement.
Thread: 1/5
A majority of voters in South Carolina are African American and so the topic of race and racism came up frequently. But because every candidate of color in the Democratic party had previously been removed from the debate stage (leaving only white candidates)...
2/5
each of whom benefited from the racism embedded in our nations presidential primary system that makes white land-owners in Iowa and New Hampshire the gatekeepers for Presidential politics, much of their words rang empty and shallow.
3/5
As one of the few candidates of color left in the 2020 Presidential race (I'm an independent), I feel it is important to interject a different, and more informed perspective into this important dialogue of who should be the next President of our country.

Today (Feb. 27) at 2 PM EST I will not only address some of the questions asked of the candidates, but I will also respond to some of their answers. Challenging them where I feel their understanding & experience falls short. #MarkCharles2020 #AllThePeople

From a Navajo man re: #FourthofJuly:
"While the #DeclarationOfIndependence may initially assert that 'All men are created equal,' thirty lines below that assertion, indigenous people are referred to as #mercilessIndianSavages.
(first 4 tweets are from #UnsettlingTruths Ch6)
1/
"The Founding Fathers could use the seemingly inclusive term 'all men' because they had a worldview informed by the Doctrine of Discovery that gave them a very narrow definition of who was actually human.
2/
"The Declaration of Independence reflects the theological imagination of its time. The Doctrine of Discovery and the myth of Anglo-Saxon superiority girds the imagination that elevates the white body, mind, language and culture.

This pattern is familiar:
US & X sign a treaty.
US pulls out of treaty & imposes sanctions.
X ceases to comply w/ broken treaty.
US decides to rejoin treaty but refuses to negotiate until X is in compliance.
X demands US drop sanctions imposed after we broke treaty.
US refuses.
Perhaps it's worth considering that other countries dislike the US, not because we're free, but because we negotiate with most of the world like they're children and we're their parent.
Just because @JoeBiden is nicer than #DonaldTrump, it doesn't mean his foreign policy is any less colonial/parental. Remember, the myth of American exceptionalism is a bipartisan value.

#ForThePeopleAct raises amt a national party can contribute to a POTUS candidate to $100,000,000. This ensures major party candidates will have a 100 million dollar advantage over 3rd party & independent candidates.
#GOP limits voters
#DEMS limit candidates
BOTH limit democracy Image
For comparison: The previous limit was "2 cents multiplied by the voting age population of the United States". In 2020 the voting age population was approximately 239 million, making the max contribution just under 5 million. Image
The max donation allowed by an individual to a National Party is $36,500 /year. So if I'm understanding this correctly, this means that for GOP & DEMS, 2,740 people will be able to increase their donation to directly benefit a single presidential candidate from $2,900 to $39,400. Image

@JoeAbuku @senatemajldr @SpeakerPelosi @realDonaldTrump @JoeBiden My position is @senatemajldr blocked a DEM nominee in 2016 & justified it by saying he wanted to give the American people a chance to speak. He didn't have the courage to state his real reason which was that he had power & wanted to thwart our nation's first black President.
@JoeAbuku @senatemajldr @SpeakerPelosi @realDonaldTrump @JoeBiden B/c @senatemajldr acted cowardly & tried to present his motivation as more noble than it was, he should now act with integrity and once again give the American people a chance to speak. Had he been honest in 2016 he could do what he's doing today & at least he'd be consistent.
@JoeAbuku @senatemajldr @SpeakerPelosi @realDonaldTrump @JoeBiden In regards to the general question of confirming a SCOTUS nominee in the final year of a presidential term, I believe a President is elected for a four year term and maintains the full power and authority of that office until a new President is sworn in...
