Thread: The #coronavirus pandemic underscores the importance of our elected officials. Black women are often ignored/marginalized by the pundit class, so I want to amplify some of their leadership/efforts. This isn't an A-Z encyclopedia but it's a start. #BlackWomenLead 1/10
Senator #KamalaHarris is a leader on intersectional policy/advocacy & sounded the alarm early about Trump's indifference to #Covid_19. She leads on paid sick leave, unemployment benefits & tirelessly advocates for BIPOC, children, workers & more. 2/10
Mayor #LondonBreed was the 1st mayor in the country to put in place a stay at home order. Her proactive leadership is being credited for the low level of cases and deaths despite the size and the 7 million population of San Francisco. #BlackWomenLead 3/10
DC Mayor #MurielBowser has been a decisive leader from being early to close restaurant dining, to issuing a stay home order, to fighting for more federal funding. Her daily #Covid_19 briefings offer clear messaging/guidance for her residents. Here's a roundup of her efforts. 4/10
New Orleans is a major hotbed for #coronavirus but Mayor #LatoyaCantrell has been instrumental in increasing testing capacity, advocating for a disaster declaration, and secure additional resources for her city. 5/10
Rep. #KarenBass has been leading on the issue of #Covid_19 testing, beefing up unemployment insurance, advocating for paid sick leave, advocating for hospital workers and more. Also as leader of the CBC she is doing an incredibly effective job. 6/10
Rep. Barbara Lee has long been a progressive champion and her response to #Covid_19 is no different. While she has advocated on many issues, her advocacy for food security and pressing Sec of Agriculture Sonny Perdue on food security stands out. 7/10
There is a lot of talk about plans but very little mention of the fact that Rep. #MaxineWaters (chair of @FSCDems) has been a fierce and effective advocate for a comprehensive response to the #Covid_19 pandemic. Read more about it ⬇️ #BlackWomenLead 8/10
Rep. #RobinKelly is a great example of staying connected with her constituents with frequent townhalls/conference calls. Between meeting with first responders, small business owners, and faith leaders she is ensuring their input shapes her advocacy.
9/10
In addition to her #Covid_19 response, Rep. #FredericaWilson has continued her advocacy for #BringBackOurGirls. On the topic of #coronavirus, Wilson is forward looking by pressing FL Gov DeSantis on a universal vote by mail system. #BlackWomenLead 10/10
PS- Like I said this doesn't include every Black woman. I encourage yall to create your own thread with another set of 9. It took me 90 minutes to compile this 🙃. A while ago I created a #BlackWomenLead Congress list to help keep up with their great work.
