1/n) 8 years ago on 7 April 2012, the #PakistanArmy suffered heavy losses when an avalanche struck the Gayari Camp in the Bilafond Glacier

The camp was a major logistic base for that sector & housed ~140 people. At that time elements of 6th Northern Light Infantry of #Pakistan
2/n) was stationed there. The camp had a major road which connected to Goma, it had helipads, quite a few buildings to support a major logistics base and nearby gun placements too.. it was on the Gayari river and was considered safe..
The avalanche which struck from the west of the camp buried it under 70 ft of snow and rocks.. there was nothing left of the camp as can be seen in this image.. and no survivors..

The loss of the camp was a setback to the Pakistani position in that area..
In 1999, during the #Kargil war, the 6th Northern Light Infantry was involved and were in the sector where Capt Saurav Kalia and his men were captured and killed.

This avalanche impacted that very same battalion..
