This morning, the @WisGOP chairman and I went on Wisconsin Public Radio together to talk about Tuesday's election. The GOP tried to rewrite history and blame everyone except themselves. The GOP forced Wisconsinites to risk infection in order to vote. 1/

I pointed out that @GovEvers called for ballots to be mailed to all Wisconsin voters within days of his #SaferAtHome order. GOP chair said no, he didn't call for ballots until "over two weeks later."

Facts: #SaferAtHome was 3/24. Ballot request: 3/27.

As the crisis grew worse, it became clear that Wisconsinites shouldn't simply limit the size of gatherings—they should #StayHome. @GovEvers ordered us to stay home, and 3 days later proposed how to do that while voting: vote by mail. GOP refused instantly.
By that point, a federal lawsuit was moving through the courts. GOP intervened, opposed.

Judge ruled Thu Apr 2 that he didn't have the power to postpone—only Gov & legislature could delay.

Next day, Gov called on legislature to postpone. GOP refused.

Saturday, April 4: GOP holds special session that lasts all of 17 seconds in Assembly, takes no action to protect voters.

Monday, April 6: @GovEvers issues executive order using emergency powers to delay. GOP sues instantly; GOP-run state Supreme Court overrides order.
On the night of Monday, April 6, the US Supreme Court ruled in "Republican National Commitee v Democratic National Committee" to stop turn in absentee ballots until Monday, April 13.

The new postmark deadline: 8pm on Election Day, April 7.

5-4 ruling.

On Tuesday, the GOP got its way. In-person voting in a pandemic. Absentee ballots still moving towards people's homes, all invalidated. Massive lines of voters in masks, refusing to be disenfranchised. A dual emergency—for public health, and democracy.
