Today PMB granted Amnesty to 2,600 of the ~74,000 inmates in Nigeria’s Custodial System (prisons) — targeted the old, ill, those coming to end of sentence, or jailed ‘cos they couldn’t afford fines

Landmark move. Also a Prison decongestion plan whose urgency #Covid19 intensified
Kudos to @raufaregbesola and all the other Govt officials spearheading and implementing these reforms.

In August 2019, PMB signed into law the Nigerian Correctional Service Act, the 1st successful reform of Nigeria’s prison legislation in almost 50 years:
“It should be noted that this [Presidential] amnesty will not apply to inmates sentenced for violent extreme offences such as terrorism, kidnapping, armed banditry, rape, human trafficking, culpable homicide and so on.“ — @raufaregbesola

In Dec 2018, @aneejnigeria, working with a network of 6 CSOs (one in each of Nigeria’s geopolitical zones), carried out a monitoring/review of the Aug/Sept 2018 Cash Transfers done under @HUPcct, as part of a transparency project known as MANTRA, supported by DFID.

Here’s the background. The Abacha Loot that was returned to Nigeria in 2018 - $322.5m - was designated for the CCT (@HUPcct). As part of the return agreement signed, it was agreed that a network of CSOs would monitor/track the disbursement of the money. Hence MANTRA. ImageImage
So in December 2018, they audited the cash transfer payments made 11 States in Aug/Sept of that year. And published a detailed report of their findings — what worked, what didn’t work, recommendations for improving the Scheme, etc — which is online here aneej.org/wp-content/upl…

One thing coming out regarding the concept of 'Isolation' for confirmed cases of #Covid19 is the mismatch between expectation and reality. Takes a while for people to realise that 'Isolation' really is 'Isolation' - its not your typical hospital stay. thisdaylive.com/index.php/2020…

A few days late but never too late.

I consider myself a Lagos guy, moved here 16 years ago. In the last 4 years I've divided my time between Lagos and Abuja, so I've kind-of started seeing myself as an Abuja guy as well. And I've become curious about the city.
Just before I 'moved' to Abuja, I started a monthly column for the New York Times. The (new) government job put an end to my new column. But the final piece I wrote was a comparative analysis (of sorts) of Lagos and Abuja: nytimes.com/2016/04/28/opi…
