537 Indonesian migrant workers arrived at Bali's Ngurah Rai Airport today. All were returning from cruise ships in the United States. They're coming in through Bali because the majority are said to be from Bali.
Yesterday (April 9), Bali Governor Wayan Koster revealed that 15 of Bali's confirmed #COVID19 cases were recently returned cruise ship crew members. Most who tested positive had returned from the United States and Italy.
Bali's total number of cases increased by 14 to 63 yesterday. Today it climbed by another 12 to 75. It's not known at this time if any of the dozen new cases involved cruise ship crew members. The Governor had said 6100 had returned to Bali between 31 March & 7 April.
Bali authorities said the 537 crew members who arrived today comprised 97 from the Carnival Cruise Line in Miami & 440 from the Carnival Cruise Line in New Orleans. With 5242 cases, New Orleans has become one of the #COVID19 hotspots in the United States. kumparan.com/kanalbali/tiba…
On arrival, each crew member goes through a registration process & their body temperature is checked using a thermo gun. Next comes an oxygen saturation test & the person is interviewed about their travel history & their health - whether they have or have had a fever, cough etc
Then they undergo a #COVID19 rapid test. Head of the Bali administration's COVID-19 task force Dewa Made Indra said if the individual passed the 3 stage of checks, they would be asked to quarantine at home for 14 days. He appealed for them to do it a disciplined manner.
There are thousands of Indonesian crew members still in limbo as their ships try to find ports still open & governments willing to allow them to dock. It's been reported previously that some have agreed to stay on board as skeleton crew to maintain the vessels.
Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said in Jakarta on Thursday: "As of now, we have 17,769 Indonesian crew members on 122 cruises, which will potentially stop sailing because of the danger of infection on board. Many are expected to return to Indonesia." jakartaglobe.id/news/more-indo…
"Our embassies in the United States, Australia, Europe & Malaysia will ensure these crew members go through a complete medical check before they return," the minister said. So they are checked before they return to Indonesia, & again when they arrive back.
The ministry is in close communication with the Bali provincial government to prepare for the crew members' return given most of them come from the tourist island. That means most will have homes to go to to begin their 14-day quarantine.
It's almost unbelievable that after the Diamond Princess, that so many vessels are still out there with passengers on board - as many as 6000, according to The Guardian. theguardian.com/environment/20…
