Proud of @OakDOT today. I personally struggled with what our approach should be, but Oakland's Slow Streets program hits the exact right notes: don't #bancars but do #slowstreets by discouraging thru traffic on residential streets. oaklandca.gov/projects/oakla…
@OakDOT With this approach, we can be also realistic about limited staff resources during #COVID19 by lifting up existing adopted plans and by "installing" with some dropped off cones & A-frames.
A lot of folks were interested in full shutdowns, much like our beloved Oaklavia events. But that takes *days* staff time pre- and during, disrupts bus lines, and requires traffic safety enforcement. It also creates a destination!
That's not the model for this moment. It's not realistic, and it's not safe, so please don't ask your city DOT for it. Instead, ask how you can support a super distributed network of quiet streets, where the only people #slowstreets touring are ... people reading these tweets 😆
And to be clear, I didn't work on our program! But I am grateful for my colleagues' work, and I'm proud that two of the first #slowstreets are shining the spotlight (& lightening the load haha!) on some freshly paved streets in our local streets program (a la #thesmoothening). 🙌
