The Chief medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan produced a new graph this evening which told a different story about the number of daily #COVID-19 deaths in Ireland. This is it. #COVID19 #COVIDIRELAND.
He explained that what NPHET reports to us on a daily basis is the number of deaths "notified" to them on that day rather than the numbers who actually died on that day. It can take a few days or even longer before any death is actually notified to them.
When they ironed out the differences and allocated the deaths to the days they had actually occurred it painted a very different picture. It showed that daily deaths actually peaked ten days ago on April 7th at 39 deaths although the reported total that day was 36.
Broadly for three weeks before 10th April the daily reported death toll underrepresented the reality of how many people actually died each day. In the past week the daily reported total has over-represented the actual number of deaths that occurred - some days by quite a lot.
The number of deaths reported today was 44, the highest yet. But in reality only 20 of those deaths actually happened today, the rest should properly be allocated to earlier dates. The new graph shows the number of daily deaths have in reality halved since peaking ten days ago.
I cobbled together this very rough graph to give an idea of the difference between what was reported daily and the deaths that actually occurred each day from #COVID19 in Ireland. Blue line shows daily reported deaths. Red bars show actual daily deaths revealed tonight.
