Hi #poptwitter! 🌍

Today, we’re excited to have @ikashnitsky for our first #PEExpertTwitterTakeover! He will be sharing info about his research all day, so make sure to follow along! Thank you, Ilya, for making this intro video and the floor is now all yours!
.@ikashnitsky: I’ve just finished my PhD thesis on unequal ageing in the regions of Europe, which I wrote at @NIDI_KNAW under the supervision of @BeerJoop and @leo_wissen. Soon to be defended at @FRW_RUG

All the papers & materials for the project are here osf.io/d4hjx/
The outbreak of #COVID19 highlighted the importance of local differences in population age structures – aged populations are more vulnerable. With @jm_aburto we explored pandemic risks across unequally aged regions of Europe osf.io/abx7s/
Availability of intensive care units turned out to be the bottleneck of the hospital systems during the #COVID19 pandemic. I contributed to the @OxfordDemSci analysis of the 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿&🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 situation
@MarkDVerhagen @drjenndowd @melindacmills

In a similar way w/ @AntonBarchuk we analysed the availability of intensive care units in regions of Russia, taking into account population age structures and hospitalization ratios

My passion is #dataviz. Using modern tools like #rstats we can communicate academic findings very efficiently and creatively. I teach dataviz intense week-long courses and shorter workshops. The next course will be an online one given at @MPIDRnews bit.ly/dataviz-mpidr-…
A fun #dataviz project that we did w/ @jschoeley used an #rstats algorithm for ternary color-coding technique – the {tricolore} package. We showcased it in a research letter to @TheLancet mapping unequally aged regions of Europe
doi.org/10/dfnv
Ternary colorcoding is a flexible #dataviz approach usable with any compositional data that splits in three non-negative parts. We used it w/ @jm_aburto to tell the story of premature male mortality (mostly homicides) in Mexico demographic-research.org/volumes/vol41/…
I’m proud to be part of the #rstats developers team led by @timriffe1 working to unify standard demographic methods in {DemoTools} package
timriffe.github.io/DemoTools/
The next big projects @jwvaupel launches at @CPop_SDU now are focused on lifespan inequality & in particular the (non)survival to pension age [funded by @RockwoolFonden and @ERC_Research].
I’m glad to be part of both and look forward to years of exciting demographic research!
That’s it for our first #PEExpertTwitterTakeover! Thank you Ilya @ikashnitsky for sharing all this great information about your research. We wish you much luck as you wrap up your PhD and continue your research in your postdoc position!
