Well equipped health system paid for by higher taxation bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
They say the best things are free but Sweden from the days my cousin left the U.K. in 70’s to marry, work and live in Sweden, was way ahead of the game by paying more in tax and reaping much better health care, pensions and other benefits as a result!
As a result they are much better placed to deal with a pandemic virus with spare ICU capacity of 10% and emergency tents set up just in case, lying empty! It’s a story of decades of preparation & paying into a future health & pension system that works because it pays for itself!
Despite having one of the world’s oldest populations and stricter controls on state funding and investment, Sweden manages to have high efficiency in health care with 3.3 doctors per 1,000 of the population of 9.5 million. The system works nonetheless!
It may not appeal to those who espouse a U.K. model of free healthcare at point of use as private healthcare insurance has grown considerably as hospitals are allowed to operate at a profit which drives private contractors down to less than 10% of health care provision!
However the Swedish system has its own form of driving other costs down as local councils and other municipal authorities take up the responsibility for costs and care of outpatients on release from hospital. The Swedish system is a less centralised and more distributed operation
Patient fees (out-of-pocket) account for approximately three percent of the total healthcare costs. The out-of-pocket fees for physician visits (including primary care) and for most visits to other providers are set by the individual county council.
However the bonus here is that there are uniform national ceilings on the total amount that a patient pays during a 12 month period. Health services for children and adolescents up to 19 year of age are free of charge. Paying socialism of equality and fast access to quality care!
All in all Sweden appears much more structured to spread the costs of healthcare in the community. It’s a model that is worth looking to but lower birth rates over time has presented greater challenges due to an ageing population!
