I admire the note of strong optimism but with the exception of England, the growing reality is that the other nations of the union have had more than enough of being tied into the fortunes of English nationalism and the disastrous outcome of decisions made at Westminster!
Northern Ireland must align itself more and more with its natural trading partner in southern Ireland and Scotland and Wales must also work to end the hegemony or dominance of decisions made mostly in the interests of a numerical majority living in England.
The union cannot continue to operate given the present lack of inclusivity of regional concerns over Brexit and the increasing demands for the right of nations to full independence in what is supposed to be a post colonial U.K. There is an inherent contradiction here!
Since the British Empire ended there have been 62 countries who have secured their independence from Britain as opposed to 28 from France yet 3 countries right in its doorstep are still being retained as subservient regions of a union that was built on inequality and corruption.
The argument that we are stronger through unity has been misinterpreted as Westminster first through binding constitutional arrangements that strangle our freedoms rather than allowing each region its own full independence thus redrafting our unity into one of purpose & respect!
That common purpose must find expression by the free will of the electorates in each country or nation state freely consenting to the areas of mutual cooperation within these islands and that can only be gained by national referendums. In Irish terms that means north and south!
Only when we forge alliances based on them serving our common interests is consent given freely, not the unequal relationship of colony and master race. Until that happens there is no point in restoring what is already beyond repair under any new trading arrangement with the EU!
