Thread: Alberta Health's procedural masks.

@AHS_media: "These masks are all safe, certified and meet ATSM Level 1 filtration requirements."

Longtime supplier PRI•MED follows ASTM F2100-11 (2011).

New supplier Vanch follows YY/T 0969-2013.

@Arfarfarf8 @mchatenay @Dave_Khan
There are key differences between the North American and Chinese standards.

ASTM Level 1 requires both Bacterial (3.0 µm) & Particle (0.1 µm) Filtering Efficiency ≥ 95%.

YY/T is silent on anything smaller than 3.0 µm.

Coronavirus average 0.125 µm.

smartairfilters.com/en/blog/compar…
Depending on the English translation, YY/T 0969-2013 requires the nose piece to be "pliable" or "plastic".

Unfortunately, Vanch took that to mean a non-pliable plastic strip in some batches, and a thin twist tie in others.

We need to see:
- AHS purchasing specification for these masks
- how Vanch was qualified as a supplier
- the test results of the pre-purchase samples
- the QC test results before release to front line
cbc.ca/news/canada/ed…
There are both logistical and health concerns with @AHS_media plan to remove the plastic wrappers from the masks here on arrival. Indefinitely.

Logistical: This is 200-500K masks/day. Who is going to unpack them, and where, to keep the masks clean?

Health: Polypropylene extrusion creates VOCs.

Which VOCs, at what levels, from Vanch's mfg process are trapped in plastic wrappers? What are the acceptable levels? What testing is being done before release to frontline workers?

Get ready for more issues soon.

"They continue to try and procure other types of acceptable alternative procedural masks, including expecting large orders (in the millions) of new types of procedural masks by the end of April."

In my 3rd tweet of this thread, I mentioned some English translations of YY/T 0969-2013 nose piece say "pliable"; others say "plastic". I accidentally posted same screenshot of "pliable" twice.

I don't have full YY/T & ASTM standards to find other differences. Has AHS done so?
AHS risking life w claim Vanch masks on Chinese YY / T 0969-2013 = PRI•MED ASTM F2100-11 (2011).

Coronavirus 0.125 µm particles aren't stopped by a 3 µm filtration standard.

Chinese YY 0469-2011 is closer, but Vanch doesn't make masks to that standard.

@amandalhu @yyCBEdu @FDArecalls Amanda, please make a Health Product Complaint to @GovCanHealth using this form.

#COVID19AB Non-Medical Masks
Misrepresented as Medical Masks

From the outset, the Hinshaw/Lagrange Plan knowingly distributes Non-Medical Masks of such poor quality:
• Manufacturer does not recommend > 4 hours use
• Students must be issued 2 per day

@SOSAlberta @schill_dawg @gilmcgowan @GosiaGasperoPhD @PopAlberta @jvipondmd @demandsbetter @TehseenLadha @BarryHunt008 @Lauren_Global Distributing Non-Medical Masks is completely counter to @CMOH_Alberta & Education Min @AdrianaLaGrange assertions that the "safe and healthy" return to in-person learning would provide Medical Masks.

#COVID19AB Rapid Antigen Self-Test Approvals 🧵
Health Canada v Europe

Premier Kenney continues to gaslight anyone who will listen on this topic. Today he did it in response to @JuliaWongCBC question around the 47:20 mark of today's COVID theatre.

He worked up the outrage to claim:
• usual distortion & deflection about federal deliveries
• Health Canada has only approved 5-6
• European regulators have approved over 60
• He has been asking feds since April 2020 to approve more tests

So let's look at these claims...
Of the 103 tests Health Canada has approved:
• 37 Point-of-Care Rapid Tests*
• 10 Self-Test*
• 27 Antigen Tests

I don't see where he is getting 6 from.

* some of these are PCR or serum

#COVID19AB Critical Worker Isolation Exemption 🧵
New York State v Alberta

I wanted to build on the fine work by Health Law experts @UbakaOgbogu and @Lorian_H, mainly from the angle of occupational health & safety.

A comparison with New York State's guidance is interesting...
Since the Alberta government loves to compare its COVID-19 performance to worst-affected jurisdictions on earth (eg USA), or New York City Schools for reopening, it's only fair to compare:

/c @imgrund

New York State

coronavirus.health.ny.gov/system/files/d…

Alberta

open.alberta.ca/dataset/f7c661…
What is a Critical Worker?

NY at least provides a (long!) list of Industries & Work that could shorten the Isolation of sick workers.

Alberta: totally up to the employer.

I don't think people realize just how broadly Alberta's order can be applied, even beyond New York's.

#COVID19AB Child Vaccination Deception 🧵

IMO, AB Health is falsely inflating age 5-11 stats, using 2 separate gambits:

1. Mixing kids who got regular, adult dose for turning 12 in 2021 into current age 5-11 getting paediatric doses now.
2. Poaching doses from age "Unknown". Image
@SOSAlberta @TehseenLadha @jvipondmd @GosiaGasperoPhD @RajBhardwajMD @PopAlberta @Adam_Toy @caitlynsmitman @demandsbetter @kasza_leslie I noticed this 2 weeks ago, and contacted a few reporters, but the false statistics remain.

In fact, Dr Hinshaw's office is citing those false stats today in preparation for her 3.30pm briefing.

@SeanDunn10 is already fact-checking another part of it.

So here is my thread from 2 weeks ago:

threadreaderapp.com/thread/1476375…

followed by a different way of presenting my analysis in the rest of today's thread.

• translation for log scale to 100, 1000, 10,000 etc
• AHS baseline 173 & maximum 380 ICU capacity
• previous record Hospitalization from AB Health
