The “toxic person” label is now so popular that there’s a huge chance it could be used against ANY of us—autistics included! NO ONE is safe from being put into the “toxic person” box & it’s a super short step from labeling behaviors to labeling people.
Autistics often lack the social skills to cope & manage intense social interactions with those close to us (or strangers) which essentially can lead to more meltdowns. Gross misunderstandings & labels of autistics leads to further damage. And THE SAME goes for the other side.
Many autistics do not have the skills to navigate these situations due to repeated abuse, neglect, gaslighting, etc. And that is FINE, no one is forcing you to “do better”. But I’ve seen the community COMPLETELY BOMBARD others who genuinely are trying to be an ally.
In fact, I’ve personally been gone after for wanting to try to work with both sides. I don’t believe *every* single person is the enemy & if we want change & true allies we have to work together. I believe a huge part of that is giving more resources to autistic people of all
Abilities to safely navigate and advocate for themselves in these situations. I believe those in the community who have a platform & a voice have a moral & ethical responsibility to work together as well instead of fueling this fire that leads to MORE pain. #ActuallyAutistic
