Inside UK care homes: why the system is failing its coronavirus test

11k Care home residents likely dead as a result of CV

NOBODY, let alone the most elderly, the weakest, the frailest the most vulnerable, would wish to be treated this way.

ft.com/content/86d980…
ONE care home end of March
2 residents were struggling to breathe. 2 days later, 1 had died and by Good Friday so had 6 more. By Thurs this week, 19 of the group’s c200 residents were dead, 59 were infected & nearly half the staff were off work, fearing they too were contagious.
It must be a nightmare for the staff who, from the FT and also @lewis_goodall #Newsnight accounts have to fight to get ANY tests for residents, let alone all residents and staff.

But Gov expected them to take hospital discharges. And were not even testing them on discharge.
Indeed there are accounts of people who the hospital knew to be COVID test positive, but neither the family nor care home that took him back were informed. He died in the care home days later amongst other vulnerable residents who cannot give meaningful consent.
Not only did care homes staff face shifting guidance and promises to the future largely unmet but they were at the bottom of the queue for PPE despite doing the most close up and personal care work, including feeding and washing.

“Lip Service” concern from the Government.
Whilst the official figures suggested 1043 Covid related deaths, ONS excess data suggests 11k excess deaths in care homes alone. How dare anyone collide with this dishonesty?

Including GPs/coroners involved in death certification?

They too have to be challenged.
Further. Looking at ONS data for deaths at home and elsewhere it looks as if they are not so far behind in excess deaths.

And today we expect to see the DHSC announce hospital deaths in total of around 20k. And they seem to run late too.
