Yesterday @deb_cohen used the term 'Rapid Onset' gender dysphoria in her interview with @BBCRadio4. The term originates from a single controversial study (Littman 2018, PLUS One) which then retracted ROGD "as a formal mental health diagnosis" The 'theory' is anti-trans hokum 1/
ROGD is an invented neologism peddled by 'Gender Critical' (anti trans) parent groups who attempt to seek harmful conversion or reparative therapies to change their trans children's gender identity. See recent @TeenVogue investigation by @herong 2/
teenvogue.com/story/gender-c…
No major health body has endorsed the theory of ROGD, and many have publicly denounced the theory, including The World Association for Transgender Health @wpath 3/ wpath.org/media/cms/Docu…

People watching @BBCNewsnight last week might’ve been mistaken in thinking it was just a rehash of their trans-hostile programme from last year, targeting trans kids and @TaviAndPort, the only NHS healthcare service supporting them.

But it was MUCH more insidious than that!...
The thing that was incredibly noticeable was the intention by @BBCNewsnight journalists to paint the picture that homophobic parents are taking their gay and lesbian kids to @TaviAndPort to be β€œtransed”!

As well as being WILDLY inaccurate, it’s also incredibly insulting! πŸ˜–...
This wasn’t just a single mention.

@BBCNewsnight made a point of repeating the unevidenced claim that parents of trans kids are just homophobes in disguise, forcing their kids to transition against their wishes! 😳

They just stopped short of calling it β€œconversion therapy”!...

If you want to read more about the Tavistock after watching #Newsnight, have a look at what we've written. All the issues were apparent at this first seminar we went to in 2016, by Bernadette Wren in Cambridge. transgendertrend.com/uk-treatment-d…
The C4 documentary Kids on the Edge: The Gender Clinic gave real insight into the workings of the clinic. A precocious 8 year-old boy who likes glitter and make-up is affirmed as a girl; a bullied, autistic 11 yr-old girl is affirmed as a boy. #Newsnight transgendertrend.com/kids-on-the-ed…
Bernadette Wren's talk at this conference in 2017 was illuminating. She expressed doubts about teenage girls, the high rate of early abuse and neglect, autism, the potential of future regret, the influence of lobby groups pushing transition. #Newsnight transgendertrend.com/hot-topics-in-…

Newsnight reporting on failures of GIDS (NHS gender identity service). Clinicians ignoring NHS guidelines and referring to medical pathway after one meeting/within one hour. Sarah Davidson named. #newsnight
Wider mental health issues and sexuality not explored. Concerns about immediate medicalisation dismissed.
Homophobia within families widespread. Parents expressing relief their child isn’t gay or lesbian, and implying β€˜trans outcome’ would be better for their child.

Young lesbian reports homophobic bullying in family and at school. Sudden desire to transition.

Lots of discussion about injustice for minorities- here's an issue which certainly affects a lot of our minority workers. It's something I'm detecting increasing disquiet about in the Commons.

The free visa extension scheme still doesn't apply to all care workers and NHS staff.
This means that workers on the frontline, in care settings and low paid NHS staff, like porters and cleaners are continuing to have to pay for their visa extensions.

You'll remember the govt U-turned on a number of these issues last month...
After it was becoming clearer the govt might lose a vote on it, ministers decided to get rid of NHS surcharge for NHS workers and carers.

The bereavement scheme was also extended to all NHS/carers, irrespective of nationality

Has there ever been such a damning & devastatingly well sourced exposure of a Prime Minister's failings as tonight's #Dispatches?

Boris Johnson & Dominic Cummings are responsible for so many deaths through their arrogance & negligence.

They should be in jail, not in No. 10.
Boris Johnson & his ministers were so full of Brexit swagger they simply couldn't recognise that a disease already wreaking havoc in other countries could possibly be a threat to Britain.

Self-inflicted ideological blindness.

British exceptionalism at its worst.

#Dispatches
Double whammy for Boris Johnson's govt tonight, with #Newsnight following #Dispatches with news that the UK deaths announced today were higher than for all EU countries *combined*.

A "world-beating" achievement, @BorisJohnson.

Is that why you professed yourself so proud today?

For some years now we have had to put up with platform after platform being given across BBC output to racists and climate change deniers and muppets talking absolute tripe. #emilymaitlis #newsnight
We have had random talking heads saying ignorant baseless things about - well anything - as if they are facts and beamed across the nation into peoples homes again and again.
We have seen absolutely unqualified humanities and fashion graduates and randoms from far right thinktanks asked to talk on issues of science and pitted against real experts as if equal weight should be given to the muppets.

Just on one group, The Four Seasons, nearly 500 residents died of confirmed Covid cases, let alone those who died but were not tested.

220 of their staff tested positive too.

The UK has become the first country in Europe to pass 30,000 coronavirus deaths.

Over the last few weeks, #Newsnight has been examining the effect of coronavirus on care homes - where the prime minister has said an epidemic is taking place.

Here's what we know

THREAD πŸ‘‡
On March 10th, before lockdown began, #Newsnight's UK Editor @KatieRazz visited a care home in Blackpool to see what preparations were being made to combat #Covid19.

Staff warned that self-isolation wasn't possible for vulnerable residents

WATCH πŸ“Ίbbc.in/2WcN0dB
The impact of #Covid19 on care homes has been apparent for weeks.

On April 2, @Lewis_goodall reported the virus was spreading "like wildfire" & was told by an assistant care home manager the way the elderly were treated was "disgusting"

25 deaths in one home in Enfield. Unimaginable. Heartbreaking. Nearly a death a day

34 days of begging for help and they got their first test.

Sure. Sure.

Shielding the most vulnerable and care homes was a priority.

Labour wards - all of them. What did the MPs do?
On a doorstep nearby, 3 yr-old Ayse picked up a tissue to wipe away her grandmother’s tears - tears for one more victim of CV19.

She was waiting for her mum, 26 yr old Sonya Kaygan. Her grandmother hadn’t broken the news that she, who worked in a care home, was dead.
How was this fucked up so badly?

How.

Anyone who mentions β€œbut β€˜flu” earns an automatic block for the callous, careless untruthful non equivalence.

53,800 excess deaths in under 7 weeks.

I shall not include test numbers until β€œtests posted” are removed

It is a travesty as is failing to count the deaths of those who tested positive under pillar two - the pillar of tests carried out by commercial and Uni labs.
This includes A LOT of care homes.
This is just wrong
This is a link to a more breakdown from DHSC.

186k+ test kits have been posted out. No idea how many have been returned. How many tests have actually been processed. The delay or the proportion +ve v -ve.
But it includes care homes
And those deaths won’t be counted

Inside UK care homes: why the system is failing its coronavirus test

11k Care home residents likely dead as a result of CV

NOBODY, let alone the most elderly, the weakest, the frailest the most vulnerable, would wish to be treated this way.

ft.com/content/86d980…
ONE care home end of March
2 residents were struggling to breathe. 2 days later, 1 had died and by Good Friday so had 6 more. By Thurs this week, 19 of the group’s c200 residents were dead, 59 were infected & nearly half the staff were off work, fearing they too were contagious.
It must be a nightmare for the staff who, from the FT and also @lewis_goodall #Newsnight accounts have to fight to get ANY tests for residents, let alone all residents and staff.

But Gov expected them to take hospital discharges. And were not even testing them on discharge.

I don't know why it took me so long... but, thanks to #Newsnight, I think I've finally worked out why the Govt is saying nothing about its exit strategy.

TL;DR It knows what it has to do, but... also knows that it isn't (yet) able to do it. THREAD. 1/11
The exit strategy depends on 2 things. First, the number of hospital admissions (and new cases) has to start falling. With a lockdown in place, and well observed, that will happen. A decision has to be made about what the *right* number is... but we *will* get there. 2/11
Second, measures need to be in place, after lockdown is (no doubt only partially) lifted, so as to ensure that the infection rate does not begin to rise (too fast). With no such measures, the inexorable result of lifting the lockdown will be an increase in cases. 3/11

Have talked to officials across a number of depts in Whitehall. As I reported on #Newsnight just now they are expecting an extension to the Brexit transition period. One told me: β€œif it doesn’t come I just don’t know what we’ll do- with coronavirus we realistically can’t do both”
Am told that senior civil servants in a number of departments are in the process of impressing upon their respective ministers, the difficulties that no Brexit transition extension would generate.
Other scenario civil servants think possible is a deal which is basically an extension. An agreement where both sides agree to extend current arrangements in a whole host of areas, with what replaces them to be decided much later.

YET ANOTHER predictable segment on #Newsnight attacking Trump - without telling us anything we didn’t already know. At some point BBC will properly focus on China’s decisive roles in #coronavirus, global warming, hi-tech espionage etc but no sigm of that being anytime soon
There is not a single word in my Tweet defending Trump.
My complaint we get repetitive, uniformative coverage of Trump and little attention on the real story of our time: the military, economic and technological rise of Beijing’s communist dictatorship

Boris Johnson's #Covid19 response is a study in "dither and delay".

Grant Shapps' Dept for Transport is refusing to release an internal report on Boris Johnson's cancelled Garden Bridge project

@LBC "The report has been suppressed on the grounds it is protecting the interests of the Garden Bridge Trust, which developed the project but which has has been in liquidation since April last year.

The report is understood to have warned the project had a funding gap of up to Β£75m"
@LBC "& advised ministers against putting more taxpayers’ money at risk by extending the government’s guarantee of the trust’s cancellation liabilities.

In the same month the report was drawn up, the trust avoided collapse by adding five months to its accounting year"

All day people @BethRigby, @bbclaurak, @GaryGibbonBlog etc reported Javid quitting as a major upset; a #reshuffle gone horribly wrong. For hours, senior No.10 figures tried to make Javid reconsider. By #Newsnight @nicholaswatt decided it was a masterful plan brilliantly executed.
It is so tiresome watching the narrative mutate and bend to Downing Street’s will and eventually reported as irrefutable fact.
Watt’s reporting has been toxic for months now. We might as well have one of those North Korean newscasters reading what is handed to them with mad fervour. At least they don’t pretend to be journalists.
