A Sing-With-You protest started about 20min ago at Cityplaza mall in Tai Koo. A large number of police just entered tha mall & appears intent on confronting the people singing. A mall protest took place in Central on Fri w/out police entering the mall. #HKPoliceState
Hundreds gathered to sing in the mall. Perhaps the large number irritated police. Policing has been especially draconian & hostile to anything that looks like a protest for months. Freedom of assembly is unjustifiably circumscribed in #HK.
Police aggressively confront people in mall who are peaceful, warning them to observe coronavirus social distancing rules. This is now a pattern: police invoke public health to stop protest. On Apr21 in YuenLong, they issued 36 tickets for violating the rules w fine of HK$2k each
Large numbers of riot police have entered the mall heavily armed. This is a place where many families with children were shopping. All others were doing was singing. Police have begun cordoning off parts of the mall. #HKPoliceState
Police have now cleared people from the mall atrium, threatening them with pepper spray & setting up a cordon, ordering all, including shoppers, to disperse. So police have turned a peaceful scene into mayhem & frightened many ordinary #HK citizens.
Some refuse to be cleared by police. Standing in front of police lines, this man holds a sign opposing Article 23 ‘national security’ legislation which #CCP officials have recently said must be enacted soon. The irony is #HKPoliceState is already a reality.
19.11 Police make the first reported arrest in the mall, of the man in maroon. They accused him of shining a flashlight at them.
Police are now conducting sweeps through the entire mall to ensure it is cleared. All shops have closed. This is what you get in #HK for getting together to sing.
Police are now threatening the few still left in the mall. As is so often the case, when the protesters disappear, the police turn their wrath on journalists. L- an officer shoves a reporter. R- an officer threatens to pepper-spray a reporter.
From 19.12: Once the police burst into the mall, the tune changed from our national anthem, #GloryToHongKong, to ‘Corrupt cops, May your whole family die!’ Police are deeply resented as an occupying force by a majority of #HK citizens. They enforce #CCP will, not the law.
2nd reported arrest of the evening at Tai Koo, near East Hotel at 20.05. Now that police have cleared the mall, they’ve moved outside where hundreds who were in the mall are now gathered.
This video’s gone viral in #HK this evening. Police mock pro-democracy District Councillor Andrew Chiu outside Cityplaza mall, the very place where a pro-CCPer bit off his ear in Nov. Here a cop keeps grabbing his ear as Chiu pleads w the cops to act rationally.
RTHK reports 4 arrested at 20.27, including a 1st-aider & an assistant to District Councillor Andrew Chiu, seen here pinned to the ground by police. This brings the arrest count to at least 7 this evening.
District Councillor Andrew Chiu’s assistant has been taken to hospital after having been pushed to the ground by riot police. He appeared to be unconscious. It’s unclear whether police arrested him, as earlier reported.
.@hsuhksueb captured on video the moment when police pushed Andrew Chiu’s assistant to the ground. He was later brought to hospital, apparently unconscious. The incident can be seen here: m.facebook.com/hsusueb/videos…
