Loving the discourse regarding orcs in rpgs, specifically #DnD
We need to be aware of real-life racial stereotypes that have been grafted onto fantasy races. And we can, *IF OUR TABLE IS COMFORTABLE*, include prejudice, etc. into our worldbuilding as DMs.
But I personally....
...fall in the camp of thinking that a #ttrpg ought to be an escape from real-world issues (racism, sexism, etc.) and that, if those issues appear at the table, it should be with the consent of all players and portrayed in such a way as to indicate that it is wrong...
... I am certainly not perfect with this, especially running old Gygax #DnD campaigns converted for 5e. I have to actively work to create nuanced races that are not "inherently" anything, and to include moral variation within all present races. But this is an ongoing...
...discussion that I think ALL people involved in #ttrpg and #DnD need to be having. How can we be better? How can we make race no longer determine alignment? Maybe, for starters, regularly including "evil race" NPCs that are good so that players don't associate a race with...
...an alignment. Maybe as DMs we need to put "good races" as villains and mooks more often so that players don't associate a race with an alignment.
I dunno. But it's GREAT that we're talking about it.
