Today let me share story of Amur Falcon, a bird which crosses Himalayas enroute to India from Mongolia & Arabian Sea for going to Africa. This bird covers 22,000 KMs flying. One of the nature’s amazing wonder. In Nagaland they come in hundreds of thousands & stay for some time.
While we were inside a female Amur Falcon named as ‘Longleng’, which flew non-stop for FIVE DAYS covering thousands of kilometres to reach Somalia in Nov last year, has returned to the Indian sub-continent. This reached India just recently. easternmirrornagaland.com/radio-tagged-f…
In one study three Amur falcons were radio tagged named as Naga, Pangati & Wokha. By 13 November they left Nagaland & by 25th December all three were in Southern Africa. With some halts in India. They took longest over water journey. Imagine the distance they covered flying.
”Naga”, flew from Nagaland in India to Somalia in eastern Africa, for five days and 10 hours non-stop and covering a distance of some 5,600km. Since a million Amur falcons arrive in Nagaland, it is also called as Amur falcon capital of the world.
Amur falcons were hunted extensively once. By raising awareness about their role & route of migration and involving communities their conservation work is paying good dividends. This is only one such bird, in nature birds migrate & all needs protection.
Animals & birds don't recognise borders. That is why we have #Bonn convention on protection of #Migratory species. Where India is a respected member. So that all can be conserved. Can fly free like these Amur falcons. Pic courtesy given. Study by WII, Nagaland govt & BNHS.
This one is Naga. They travel from eastern Asia all the way to southern Africa and back every year (as map shared above). What a journey this bird is taking. They cross high Himalayas (special adaptations) & rest in India for their further journey. PC Nick Williams.
Till 2012 they were hunted in thousands in Nagaland. Which became a huge issue. Later govts, community members & NGOs came forward to conserve them. Now Nagaland happily welcome them & even celebrate Amur Falcon festival every year. A great success story. PC Nagalandpost

You remember this Selfie of the century from Virunga national park. 13 Eco Guards killed in Virunga National park yesterday in Congo. In last 20 years 180+ foresters have laid down their lives fighting poachers and defending Gorillas, on the line of duty. RIP our earth heroes.
A statement on the park's website said there were indications that this was an attack on the local civilian population.

"Virunga Park Rangers were not the target of the assault, but lost their lives responding to the attack in defence of the local population". #BBC.
The Park was established in 1925 as Africa's first National Park. Here is the official statement by Park with details of all 13 rangers which lost their lives in ambush.

This is a #Pangolin, the most trafficked mammal on planet. Found across India naturally & un-harmful but millions are hunted & trafficked across Asia & Africa. All eight species of them are under threat for their use in medicines. There is no proof that they spread #Covid19.
They are Ant eaters & important part of ecosystem. Indian pangolin is found across India & now endangered. Everywhere they are on their last leg. Scales are used in traditional medicines mistakenly for ailments & reducing impotency. Huge market in China & SE Asia. Both AP images.
Last year Singapore seized 8.8 tonnes of #elephant #ivory & 11.9 tonnes of #pangolin scales in 3 containers en route from DR Congo to Vietnam. For which 33,000 pangloin were killed. This is only one such seizure. There is huge market & harmless creature hunted to the extinction.

#Porcupine vs #Leopard. Porcupines are difficult to hunt as they have needles all over their body. Only few can do that, leopards are one of them. They turn them upside down. But this one is with less experience. Old video from Africa.
Here this one from India. When a leopard killed a porcupine & taking away. This is from last year shot by Zubin.
#Porcupine body contains thousands of quills, upto 30000, which acts as defence mechanism. Each quill has a topical antibiotic. In wild only few can kill a porcupine, #leopards are one of them. But not this time. Video from net. Of this size, from my archives. Image
