People of America! I want to talk about two photos that tell the story of food in our country in this moment...two different, painful realities that we are experiencing, and the opportunity we must seize to make sure food is not the problem but the solution 1/
The first is from Idaho. Huge mountains of potatoes without any buyers because so many of the forms in which we eat them - stadiums, cafeterias, restaurants - are shut down for safety an low demand, and so too are the processing plants. 2/
Next, thousands of cars in line for a food bank...in San Antonio, but could be anywhere in the country right now. With millions out of work and many visiting food banks for the first time, the system is totally overwhelmed and people are going hungry. 3/
How is it possible these two photos exist at the same time, in the most prosperous and technologically advanced moment in our history? It’s because all along the way, we have a food supply chain that we treat as invisible when it’s working...and only notice it when it’s not. 4/
The farm workers - including millions of immigrants and millions more undocumented - working in the fields. The processing facility. The truck driver who proudly transports our food. The wholesaler and grocery store clerk. The prep cook, cafeteria worker, waiter, dishwasher! 5/
There is so much work to fix the system. @WCKitchen is doing what we know best, working with farmers and restaurants and everyone in between to feed anybody in need of a meal, and in the process strengthening local economies. And we have so many great partners in this fight! 6/
But we need leadership from on top. Food leadership! We need @WhiteHouse @realDonaldTrump @SpeakerPelosi @senatemajldr and all of Congress to make food and feeding Americans a priority. We need leadership from @USDA, @fema, and @NationalGuard, from governors and mayors too! 7/
Call your elected officials & ask what they are doing to make food part of the solution. Ask what specific legislation they are supporting to increase #SNAP, empower food banks & non profits, involve restaurants, and ensure the govt is buying from farms. Accept nothing less. 8/
I’ve always said that a humble plate of food is more than just a meal - it’s a message of hope, that we care, and that tomorrow things will better. Now more than ever, this is true of the food we eat from the farm to our tables and every place in between. 9/
I hope to keep bringing you more stories of food and hope. In honor of the New Deal’s WPA program that chronicled the great food traditions of our country, I’m calling this series #AmericaEats. I hope you’ll join me, be inspired, and share your stories too. 😄👨‍🍳🇺🇸💪 /end
