Anyway still waiting for the 3:30pm daily #covid19 update from #ableg. This one will have details on provincial plans to start reopening Alberta ✌️
Here we go. We start with Kenney remembering the victims of the military helicopter crash off Greece. #ableg
Quick update on flooding in Northern Alberta too - Kenney pleased to see the ice jams melting #ableg
To the careful and gradual lifting of restrictions... Kenney says public efforts are the reason we're able to move this way. "The losses have been hard" though, and there will be more to come. And yeah the economy will suck for a while #ableg
Kenney gives props to Hinshaw and her team for their preparations of PPE and testing. #ableg
We've achieved our primarily goal of flattening the curve of infections, Kenney says (way to go Alberta) #ableg
Because we didn't over-react, only about 15% of businesses had to close per public health orders, Kenney says, adds he's not saying that to minimize the suffering and sacrifices of everyone who did so much. "We are in a strong place," he says #ableg
We'll have to keep physical distancing measures in place for a while, Kenney says (WHEN CAN I HUG MY FRIIIIIIIEEEEEENDSSSSS 😭) #ableg
At every stage of the relaunch Albertans will have to keep washing their hands and stay 2m apart and stay home if you show symptoms (see previous tweet re: hugging). The success of the relaunch depends on everyone doing this, Kenney says #ableg
Kenney says more ICU, hospital beds, ventilators are still being added. Once Hinshaw is satisfied all the necessary equipment is in place, then we can start a staged re-opening. That'll likely be May 14 when retail stores can re-open WITH strict health guidelines in place #ableg
Here's the info on Alberta's gradual reopening. No gyms or nightclubs yet, pals #ableg
Now all of this hinges on EVERYONE not being total dinks, and continuing physical distancing and all that stuff... that means keeping the curve flattened. #ableg
No mass gatherings in Stage 2, btw, but you'll be able to get a massage (hello this is relevant to my interests) #ableg
Non-essential travel will be back on the cards in a few stages. WOOOOOO #ableg
AHS will resume some elective surgeries as early as Monday May 4, dental clinics also. Campsite bookings will reopen on May 14. Large group camping, programming to remain closed for foreseeable future. LOLOL golf courses can reopen this weekend ARE YOU HAPPY NOW GOLFERS #ableg
Some parks will also reopen this week, as will some boat launches. BUT, GUYS. This whole plan is NOT set in stone and it all depends on the curve remaining, uh, flat #ableg
In some stages we may be able to take a step forward, in some we may need to take a step back. In this sense, the relaunch is very much like the hokey-pokey #ableg
We're back to the buffalo metaphor😂 BUT THIS TIME it's when wolves come to attack they gather together to protect weaker members of the pack, Kenney says. So keep... uh... being buffalo or something I guess #ableg
Man, every single time Kenney brings up buffalo I immediately think of this #ableg
Anyway Hinshaw says one death attributed to #covid19 was not, in fact, from the virus so it has been taken out of the tally #ableg
Hinshaw thanks everyone for their cooperation so far, but says we're not out of the woods yet #ableg
First up: Yo how come the meat plant inspection was done online and not in-person, how do we know they didn't just show OHS the stuff they wanted to see? Hinshaw: Can't comment on OHS processes, but says AHS conducted 7rl physical inspections #ableg
A lot of folks in my mentions asking for specifics on which parks will reopen, which campgrounds etc, I'm afraid I don't have those deets but I'm sure we'll find out closer to the time. I'd highly recommend reading a couple of stories from outlets you trust #ableg
Bell up with Q dear to my heart: WHEN CAN WE GO TO A PUB?? Kenney: We're tracking key #s in the health system and curve is lower than feared (this is in response to how Alberta landed on this plan). As for 🍻? That's probably May 14 OMGOMGOMG (with restricted capacity) #ableg
Excuse me while I go and book May 14 off work to spend the day on a pub's patio (you better be good, Alberta, and not let that curve uptick or you'll have an angry Aussie on your hands and trust me you don't want that) #ableg
Hey shout-out to Edmontonians, Kenney says, for having fewer local cases. But look, again, all of this depends on the number of cases and hospitalizations we see over the coming weeks #ableg
Kenney: The plan can and will change as the numbers evolve, and again gvt will keep their eye on that. As for industry-specific guidelines, gvt is working on that. #ableg
Schools: They WON'T reopen for this academic year, but gvt is in discussion with school boards about *some* reopening on a limited basis (for example, summer schools with physical distancing rules). Schools may end up coming back earlier post-summer, but not decision made #ableg
WAIT WAIT, we have a clarity Q on beer: Restaurants will be allowed to open on a limited basis in phase one, and that applies to cafes, bars etc. If they're licenced, they can serve booze. Ah, right, this all comes down to which licence a bar has, Hinshaw adds. #ableg
So only those bars/restaurants/cafes where minors are permitted will be able to reopen, and even then it'll be limited capacity (so not nightclubs, for example). #ableg
To elective surgeries: Scheduled day surgeries like cataract and some orthopedic services will be on the list to be done first up #ableg
Something about hockey something: Yeah nah. But limited use of arenas and similar facilities would be considered by gvt as they're proposed #ableg
What constitutes "stable" cases? The key triggers the gvt is looking at here is the number of hospitalizations we see. Not total number but also where those cases are and how many into ICU. There *may* be outbreak-specific rules here #ableg
Earlier this week you said we expect a peak mid-May so how come we're opening in... uh... mid-May? Kenney: The curve has flattened significantly and we're waaaaaaay below the capacity of Alberta's health system. #ableg
Next Q is about a creeping # of cases at the Amazon centre just north of Calgary (which AHS says isn't an outbreak). What's up with that? Hinshaw hasn't had an opportunity to talk to her colleagues about that, but says cases at workplaces are always investigated #ableg
To Cargill meat plant: How sure are you it'll get back up and running? Will there be a public/criminal inquiry? Kenney: criminal depends on cops, OHS *is* looking into it. As for a public inquiry, post-pandemic gvt will launch a comprehensive study of what went right/wrong #ableg
My note: That's gonna be one hellava report, yo #ableg
Kenney: For those peeps who want us to shut everything down until zero risk, food supply chains are an essential service and those meat plants comprise 75% of Canada's meat consumption and we need operators #ableg
We want to be as safe as possible, but we "simply cannot" close down every food processing plant because that would be... problematic, Kenney says #ableg
Kenney asked about schools and says some schools (maybe charter, for instance) could maybe possibly have plans to reopen on a limited basis -- but again, no decisions made and also it's not the overarching rule. #ableg
And that, pals, is the end of another #covid19 briefing for Alberta. #ableg
