Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says mass shootings are happening more often than they used to.
PM says teenagers are growing up in a world where gun violence is normalized.
PM Trudeau says his govt promised to ban assault style weapons and buy these weapons back during the election as well as a municipal hand gun ban.
PM promises to ban "military grade assault style" firearms in Canada. Waiting to see if this means ALL semi-automatic firearms. Military grade fully automatic are already prohibited.
"Effectively immediately it is no longer to buy, sell, transport or use military grade assault weapons" PM. PM says there will be a 2 year amnesty period and legislate "fair compensation" for gun owners
I do wish the government would not call things military grade assault weapons. There's no such term. Automatic (what many militaries use) is already banned. Are we talking a complete ban on semi-auto. Looking for some clarity.
No word yet on whether anything will be done to up border enforcement - police believe most of the Nova Scotia shooter's guns came from the United States, smuggled into Canada.
Mayors have pushed back on the idea of municipal hand gun bans, saying almost impossible to enforce.
"we are ending the militarization of our society" says Blair. Interesting view.
If the government doesn't ban all semi-autos they will not actually be banning the capability they are talking about.
Curious to know why the government is moving such a significant change as an order in council instead of through Parliament, especially when they have a minority.
Why is the government stating military grade firearms are available in Canada legally. They're not. The magazine size and capabilities of military weapons are prohibited in Canada. There is an argument to be made for banning semi-autos, it's not "military weapons"
Both Blair and Lametti are repeatedly mentioning the Nova Scotia shooting in explaining new measures. Those guns were not legal. Police believe all but one of those guns were smuggled in to Cda, laws here wouldn't have stopped that so why are Ministers linking it?
Minister Blair says the firearms being banned are not used for hunting, but then Minister Lametti talks about indigenous people being allowed to keep using them for hunting.
Freeland raises the culture around the "fetishization" of some of these firearms... there is an interesting argument to be made around the look of guns mass shooters tend to be attracted to.
Also banned today: mortars, rocket launchers and artillery. canadagazette.gc.ca/rp-pr/p2/2020/…
