/ German debate on @NATO nuclear sharing is picking up speed: Rolf Mützenich, chairman of coalition partner Social Democrats @spdbt in Parliament in @Tagesspiegel interview tomorrow apparntly calls for future end of #nuclearweapons deployments in Germany is.gd/EFCfLb
/ Mützenich argues that other @NATO allies participate in nuclear sharing even though they have renounced option to host US nuclear weapons. (To be precise: 21 of 30 NATO allies participate in Nuclear Planning Group even though their territory is free of #nuclearweapons.)
/ Also points to unilateralism of US administration and argues "Does any believe that @realDonaldTrump would stop planning for #nuclearweapons use just because we are able to transport a few warheads?"
/ A few predictable reactions: Deputy speaker for conservatives @JoWadephul calls nuclear deterrence "irreplacable" and @spdbt position "irresponsible". Argues that nuclear sharing is important for Alliance cohesion. cducsu.de/node/54297
/ Social Democrat defense spokesperson @fritzfelgentreu calls Mützenich position "not quite coherent". Argues that nuclear host nations have greater influence on @NATO nuclear policy than nuclear-free countries.
/ My bottom-line: This debate is long overdue. Focuses on core question: What influence does @NATO nuclear sharing give allies/host nations on nuclear policies of US/UK? It is telling that contribution of #B61 to deterrence is of secondary importance in debate so far.
/7 This should be starting point of transparent, open, inclusive and fact-based discussion about security risks and benefits of nuclear sharing, as my @IFSHHamburg colleagues @PFuhrhop @DrUlrichKuehn and I have recently argued here (in German): is.gd/i7FhcL
