El monstruo de Tully (Tullimonstrum gregarium) habito las aguas del Carbonífero hace unos 300 millones de años. Desde que se describió en 1966 los científicos aún no han conseguido clasificarlo correctamente. ¿Un vertebrado? ¿Un cefalópodo? ¿Otro tipo de invertebrado?
El animal presenta caracteres que han hecho que en las últimas décadas, diferentes investigadores lo hayan clasificado como cordado, cefalópodo, un molusco sin su closca, etc... diferentes pruebas han dado lugar a distintas clasificiones.
Un nuevo estudio vuelve a considerar que se trata de un vertebrado, considerando que estaba relacionado con los ancestros de las lampreas actuales.
Se cree que su extraño aspecto es el resultado de una dieta especializada, basada en gusanos marinos que debían capturar con su "boca-pinza". Aquí un video que recrea como podía ser.
