With every week that goes by, the situation in care homes looks more and more grave.

With updated ONS data, can now say that care home deaths for week 17 (end April 26) are up 282% on the 5 year average for the same week.

Even non-#COVID19 care home deaths are up 147%.
Last week the equivalent figure for care home deaths was 240%. Right now, it's getting worse, not better.

To put some numbers on this, rather than %

We'd normally expect roughly 15,620 care home residents in to die in the last seven weeks of the year. So far there's been 31,218
To put another way over the last month we'd normally expect 2.3% of the care home population in England and Wales to pass away

Instead, roughly 5.8% of the care home population in England and Wales have died in a month. True figure will be more as some residents die in hospital.
Worth remembering that many if not all of these care home residents will have died without their families around them.
We're seeing a similar pattern in people dying at home, numbers are continuing to climb.

Using latest ONS data, we can say that deaths at home are up 112% on what we'd expect at this time of year. Much of this is mortality where Covid is not the recorded cause of death.
