WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN QIYAAMUL LAYL (TAHAJJUD) & TARAWEEH?

Shaykh Allaamah Ibn Uthaymeen (Rahimahullah) was asked this question & this was his reply:

This questioner believes there is a difference between the two. In reality, there's no difference between them.
Taraweeh is part of Qiyamul Layl (or Tahajjud). Thus, we consider Muslims that stand (in prayer) in the month of #Ramadan from the beginning of the night. This is because, the saying of the Noble Prophet (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) that: "Whoever stand (in prayers) the nights of
#Ramadhan with faith & seeking Allah's reward, then Allaah Has forgiven him/her whatever he/she has sinned in the past", comprises of Taraweeh, because it is part of Qiyaamul Layl, without any doubt. However, it has become a culture in some people that the night prayer in which
the recitation, the Sujood, the Rukoo' are being elongated is referred to as Qiyaamul Layl (or Tahajjud), while the night prayers in which the recitation, rukoo & Sujood are made short, not long is referred to as Taraweeh. This however isn't a Shariah perception, but traditional.
In Shariah, Taraweeh & Qiyamal Layl (Tahajjud) is the same thing. Both of them are night prayers. But the definition people give, based on what is being oft-practised, is that in Qiyaamul Layl, the prayer components of sujood, rukoo & recitation are made longer, & is performed
at the last part of the night, because the last part of the night is a time when Du'as are being accepted more, due to the saying of the Prophet (SAW) that: "Our Lord comes to the lower heaven at the last part of the night & say, Who is it that has a prayer & I will answer?
Who is it that has a request? , & I will grant it. Who is it that is seeking for my forgiveness? And I will forgive him,' and this continues until the dawn appears".

It is a matter of comfort. One can pray at the beginning of the night, middle or end of the night. The most
important thing is,. Ake sure you do not waste the nights in #Ramadhan without praying.

May Allaah count us among those whose sins will be forgiven in this blessed month. Ameen.
