I had a poetry prof who would ask the class what feelings or imagery the poem being studied evoked in us. If you were not one of his select few pets, no matter how you answered that, he would say, "No". And move on to ask someone else. 1/5
Completely undermining our confidence and belief in our ability to understand and and interpret language, metaphor, and imagery. He would then go on to ask each of us to describe the meaning of some phrase in the poem. 2/5
Again, every answer was met with a curt, "No", except for his favourites. There were maybe 4 in our seminar class, 3 doe-eyed young women who hung on his every word and gasped or nodded at appropriate moments, and 1 very androgynous young man who did the same. 3/5
The dude was at least 70, at least, by the reckoning of my 19 year old eyes. The whole term was awful. He had us hand in a portfolio of our own poetry as one of the assignments. I had written poetry since I could print words. 4/5
I turned in my five best recent pieces. I don't remember every awful thing he wrote in the comments, but I do remember crying and thinking I must never write poetry again. It was years before I wrote anything, prose or poetry, after that class. 5/5
As a post-script, for all you profs out there, especially those who deal with creative material, this is exactly how not to do it.
