On #MahaRanaPratapJayanti let me share a small thread in Life and Times of #MaharanaPratap

1/12
#MaharanaPratap was born to Rana Udai Singh II on 09 May 1540 in Kumbalgarh fort and went on to become the 13th king of the Mewar State.

2/12
#Maharana was perhaps the only king of the #Mewar State who did not build or add to any of the existing palace.

#MaharanaPratap's entire life and energy was spent fighting the Mughals esp Akbar.

3/12
#MaharanaPratap was born 4 yrs after the bloody siege of Chittorgarh which had left a deep impact on Mewar as 1000s of soldiers were killed in the siege, followed by the murder of another 20-25,000 civilians by the Mughal army led by Akbar and #Jauhar of 1000s of women

4/12
Since #MaharanaPratap became the King, Akbar sent a several envoys to convince #Maharana to accept the supremacy of #Mughals like the other Rajput Kings and accept Mughal Sovereignty.

5/12
In June, 1576 the #BattleOfHaldighati was fought, #MaharanaPratap unsuccessfully battled with Akbar's army led by Man Singh.

#Maharana fought like a lion but 6 hrs in to the battle was severely wounded and had to retreat.

6/12
In those days elephants were made to sniff opium to ensure better control on them on the battlefield.

Left with only horses #Maharanapratap used to drape up his horse with an Elephant Mask to confuse and scare the drugged elements

7/12
The mention of #Haldighati is incomplete without the mention of #Maharanapratap's horse - #Chetak who inspite of having one his rear legs teared by the tusk in the battlefield rushed his semi conscious master to safety across the river and ultimately have up his life.

8/12
Though the #Mughals couldn't capture of kill #Maharanapratap or any of the members of his family, the Mewar State was still at a loss after #Haldighati.

9/12
In 1582 #Maharanapratap attacked the Mughal post at Dewair (Dawer) and went on to win all the lost territories and more.

This loss pushed back Akbar who didn't dare attack Mewar again.

10/12
Unfortunately #Maharanapratap died in 1597 as a result of a hunting accident at the age of 56.

11/12
Sharing a few words by Historian Satish Chandra who writes on #MaharanaPratap's defiance of the mighty Mughal empire
