Just announced by @AAMCtoday: ERAS delayed; applications/MSPE released Oct 21.

Other recommendations:
- Limit away rotations
- Conduct virtual interviews
- Perform holistic review

What's missing? A mechanism to limit applications. @jbcarmody #meded 1/

Applications have been rising for years. With #COVID #pandemic related disruptions to clerkships, aways, volunteer/research opportunities, #medicalstudent anxiety will be at an all time high (understandably). 2/

We are bound to see an even steeper increase in application numbers. Please head over to @jbcarmody for his excellent blog posts on application fever for more info on the background and myths surrounding application caps: thesheriffofsodium.com/2019/03/02/the…

@AAMCtoday along with many other organizations (incl @NBMEnow @AmerMedicalAssn) as part of the Coalition for Physician Accountability are now asking programs to essentially redesign residency selection processes. 4/
These recommendations are reasonable, and honestly, should have been implemented long ago. They could - if done appropriately - reduce disparities, increase access to specialties and programs, and limit effects of travel on #climatecrisis. However, they are not sufficient. 5/
We need application caps. We needed them last year, and the year before that, and the year before that...and you get it. And we certainly will need them this year. 6/
We are now asked to perform holistic review (a worthy goal, but a time-intensive one) with less time.

...while also figuring out how to create virtual clerkships & conduct all-remote interviews...all while managing a residency program in the midst of a #pandemic. #meded 7/
I agree with the recommendations. I think holistic review is critical. But, given that we are expected to implement all of this with a shorter time frame, @AAMCtoday @TheNRMP et al could have helped us out a little...and in doing so, also helped out #medicalstudents. 8/
Remember, application fever hurts #medicalstudents and contributes to an incredibly costly and stressful application process. It also hurts applicant-program fit, as the system becomes more chaotic with more and more applications. 9/

Who does benefit from application fever? 10/
