X : Have you thought about using this as your x-axis?
Me : The x-axis on the map was built over 6 months on the back of analysis of about 9,221 publications and testing against a huge number of activities. I suspect this maybe why it has stood the test of time so far.
Me : Of course, those labels are just labels for the different stages of evolution. It really should be I, II, III, IV but that's meaningless ... so I used labels from the publications and you can mix a match any of these.
Me : Hence when I do my culture stuff, I use a different set of labels for the same stages i.e. physical activities, practices, data, knowledge and any form of capital under competition evolves.
Me : Those stages come from the characteristics of the publications which is listed in the cheat sheet. The publications give both the characteristics and the labels ...
Me : ... and its the frequency change in the publications which was used to create the original evolution axis which I then tested against lots of activities before finally publishing in 2007 (?) ... I'd have to go dig that up.
Me : Basically, it's all interconnected.
X : What about my x-axis?
Me : I have nothing to substantiate or disprove your axis. You're off the path as far as I'm concerned. How did you come up with it?
X : I thought it made more sense.
Me : Hmmm.
X : What does that mean?
Me : Well, it took me 6 months and 9,000+ publications to come up with my axis. Maybe you can just create a better one off the top of your head. Hats off to you. I would suggest at least trying to build some coherent reasoning beyond "I thought of it".
X : Well, I think there are more stages.
Me : Excellent.
X : You seem dismissive.
Me : Look, I can't argue with your opinion of what you think there is. You want to create your own "Mr X" Maps then go ahead. If it's more useful and stands the test of time ... it'll win.
Me : Is there some reason that you need to change the axis?
X : The axis doesn't fit the story I need to tell.
Me : Hmmm. Maybe that's a problem with the story? Maps aren't there to confirm your story, they are there to allow challenge. What's your story anyway?
X : We've created an industry standard which has not been widely adopted.
Me : Ok, standards are often used to push industrialisation. Is there a defacto?
X : Yes.
Me : Ah ... so like this?
X : Well, we want to replace the defacto.
Me : Ok, are the providers on board? IF not you need to create a massive benefit or meet some other need i.e. environmental. I suspect the problem is not the map.
X : Who is X?
Me : Well, the above thread is seven different conversations weaved into one. So, no-one and everyone.
X : Do you include me?
Me : That's eight now.
