Background: Managing chaos is sort of my yoga and 18 years ago, in early March, I put together a chart for my students to help ground them. The Coronavirus may be new; crisis management is not. Plenty of mistakes and outrages since then, but only way is forward. 2/
So, where are we now? If you had been following along, social distancing was always going to be followed by (for want of better term) an adaptive recovery stage where we learned to live with, manage around the virus, utilizing different tools and policies to minimize the risk. 3/
There are no ideological camps; due to failures of this WH, we had to take an aggressive response and then begin to implement a recovery. Nearly 100K US dead. The "it wasn't as bad as we thought" (100K and counting is a tragedy, btw) is the preparedness paradox and tiresome. 4/
So, where are we? We are doing something unique: we are in the response phase AND also in the adaptive recovery stage. We will see more deaths, potentially many more, so we have to use every tool to try to limit them. We know there is always risk, so we learn to minimize it. 5/
What does that look like for businesses, government or individuals? Here's how we are trying to manage the chaos: think of it less as a light switch, the WH's open/close way of thinking, and more as figuring out a tough balance. Shutting down really was logistically easier. 6/
#Reimagining2020 is about managing 3 priorities for safest path forward:
Minimize Contact Intensity (gym vs. dry cleaner)
Manage # of Contacts (5 better than 500, see churches)
Maximize Mitigation Policies (masks, de-densify, continue to social distance, etc.)

Remember, every tool has to be used. We still focus on logistics (love them more, please), testing, tracing, a search for treatments and vaccine; be ready to shut down with new outbreaks; and GO SLOW. But we move forward with the virus. 8/
