#GeorgeFloyd's murder exposes the dark underbelly of US that has abrogated on itself the right to export democracy abroad -Iraq,Afghanistan,etc. This self proclaimed harbinger of world peace perpetuates systemic injustice against blacks at home.

2/7, It shows little has changed in US over decades. But we in India, the self-proclaimed world's largest democracy, shouldn't be surprised. We have a Constitution that promises equality to all irrespective of caste & religion, but our system denies it everyday.

3/7. George Floyd's murder reminds me most of Pehlu Khan, Akhlaq, Tabrez Ansari, Alimuddin Ansari. In India, lynching of Muslims has become so normalized that it doesn't even lead to outrage anymore. Its openly celebrated& murderers are garlanded by ministers.

4/7. It is not limited to Muslims. According to NCRB, a crime is committed against Dalits every 15 mins in India. Everday, 6 dalit women are raped. Between 2006-2016, crimes against Dalits rose by 25%. This is our own dark underbelly.

It is a bit hypocritical to tweet #BlackLivesMatter while remaining oblivious of injustices here. You couldn't see the bestiality in that video.What about the videos & images that come regularly from Kashmir - of children blinded by pellets or a civilian tied to army jeep?

The rise of right wing forces represented by Trump in the US and Modi in India has further accentuated these deep fault-lines of inequalities. They seek to turn the clock back and dismantle even the very notion of (even formal) equality of all human beings. #BlackLivesMatter

7/7. Be it blacks in US, or Muslims, Dalits & Kashmiris here, victims of violence are those who have been systemically marginalized. We need to address this root cause. We have to fight not just to preserve formal equality, but to achieve real equality. #BlackLivesMatter
