Window broken at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute building. Protesters wrote “fuck Reagan” and “black lives matter” on the building. Thick black smoke rising nearby.
Found the fire: Vehicle on fire at the corner of 16th and I St. Police have blocked off the street. Protesters are running back toward the park, saying “they’re boxing us in!” Firefighters just arrived.
Getting more violent over here. Protesters are stealing dumpsters to set on fire and slinging bricks at the cops. Police used tear gas to clear protesters from the Reagan bldg. All of the I & 16th St intersection is blocked by police w/ riot shields, and they’re pushing forward.
Police just set off enough tear gas to fill up an entire block. Crowd took off running up 16th back toward Lafayette Park as the line of police moved forward. Fireworks have been going off nonstop. I don’t know who’s been launching them.
DC police moving in now. Pushing the crowd back with flash bangs every few feet. They’re closing in on protesters from multiple sides.
Protesters are trying to use barricades against the police. To slow them down, to cut them off, to create a barrier between them. Police keep pushing up, scattering the crowd by setting off explosives. #DCProtests
Hard to see in this video, but protesters managed to pull down the American flag flying outside the Dept. of Veteran Affairs import-export bank at H & Vermont — and they replaced it with a white sheet spray painted with the words, “Black lives matter.” #DC
Protesters at H and Vermont are taking a knee and asking black and brown police officers to do the same. The police, mostly #DC police officers now, haven’t budged.
“At least one” #DC police officer hospitalized tonight, per the police union. Tweeted out while a standoff continues at the corner of H and Vermont, just a few blocks away from the White House.
This standoff came to a standstill and after about an hour, the police fell back to the periphery of Lafayette Square. Protesters, by then, were sitting on curbs and milling in the road. Maybe 100 people left.
Police have moved back to the interior of Lafayette Park. Barricades remain around the park’s perimeter, but they’re giving protesters plenty of space. Maybe 50 demonstrators left out here. #dcprotest
The officers left out here, a mix of Park Police and DC police officers, have gas masks on. But things are calm right now. Protesters are sitting in the street. Some try to reason w/ the police, especially the black cops: “If you weren’t in that uniform, would they protect you?”
This is the lone sign left hanging on the barricades around Lafayette Square.
