The scene at the corner of East Main and 14th right now.
Colette McEachin, Richmond’s Commonwealth’s Attorney, is at the 17th Street Farmers Market, where hundreds are gathered for a demonstration. She praised people in attendance today for making their voices heard peacefully.
As for protests the last 48 hours, she said she hasn’t seen anything like them in 30-plus years here.“It’s been horrible. Absolutely horrible. Everyone is absolutely sickened and disgusted. Nobody who lives in Richmond is happy or proud about what has happened this past weekend.”
Asked her what she thought of #GeorgeFloyd. She was unequivocal. “It was disgusting. It was murder ... There is no question.”

Speaker to city leaders: “Reap what you have sown. Every fire is the fault of the Richmond City Council and Levar Stoney.” #Richmond #GeorgeFloyd #ShockoeBottom
...
Clarification: Staffer reached out to say this was an accidental ‘like’ on their part, not McAuliffe’s doing.
A 17-year-old graduating senior who says he snuck out to take part in the demonstration.
Demonstration is drawing to a close at 17th Street Market. About to start marching back to Brown’s Island, where it began this morning.
Well, some drove and some marched from Brown’s earlier so people are kind of dispersing.
Lot of graffiti throughout downtown. Saw these two messages scrawled on the Capitol Square wall: “Avenge George Floyd” and “COPS AND CLAN GO HAND AND HAND.”
On the Federal Court building.
Monument Avenue, about an hour before the curfew takes effect.
Dozens of police in riot gear gathering outside the RPD headquarters. Few protesters nearby at the moment. Broad looked pretty desolate after the 8 p.m. curfew took effect.
Virtually all of Broad is boarded up. Not a ton of foot traffic. Still lots of people out driving though.
Hundreds of demonstrators marching down Franklin, about a block from the police staging area.
Turning toward the Capitol on East Broad. #Richmond
Someone marching tried to pull me off of the Pulse stop as I was taking this video, angry that I was filming demonstrators marching through downtown.
Cops headed protestors off on Grace, about two blocks from the Capitol. Threw tear gas.
Just witnessed black protestors shout down white ones who were trying to knock over barriers near the Capitol.
Large group of riot officers waiting at the Capitol. Demonstration heading back on to Broad.
“Go home or your will be arrested,” police on intercom tailing crowd. They launch tear gas directly into the middle of the crowd. Crowd splits.
Police trying to box protestors in. Tear gas filling the air.
Clash outside of the medical center led many to cough and scream as police sprayed some sort of tear gas like stuff. Everyone scattered.
Big group of demonstrators now wedged between police by the VCU medical center. Police have Broad blocked off.
I’ve lost track of where the group is, if there is still a group. Was among a crowd of 40 or 50 people on Marshall. Police lobbed tear gas canisters again. Everyone ran.
I also ripped my pants in the crotch, so that’s not great.
People are coalescing at 3rd and Broad now. Can’t tell how many. Police aren’t far behind.
After a brief wardrobe change, I’m back out on the streets. Not seeing a ton of people but hearing a lot of sirens.
Caught up to group by Monroe Park. Police surrounded it quickly, firing canisters of the gas. Air was thick with it. Had to duck out as it dispersed. Whole inside of my mask is snot.
Walked up to Monument and back down Broad, where someone has begun launching fireworks at 2nd. Maybe 50 people gathered on the corners. Cars blaring music.
Police fired several more tear gas canisters. Everyone scattered. Others in riot gear closed in to sweep anyone straggling.
