Despite whatever anyone says about the French, but when it comes to protecting the French Republic's essential precincts, the Gendarmerie do not tolerate what you are seeing in DC right now.
In London and Paris, which are both global cities & national capitals, the police/Gendarmerie 'kettling' protests to avoid what you are seeing in DC right now. While controversial, no one's right to protest ever includes violence, looting, rioting & trashing churches/synagogues.
You do not need to be Napoleon or Radetzky to know that something more is required now to restore order and enforce law....and that these are not “protesters” ‘protesting’

In their very different ways, Bernie Sanders & Donald Trump both upended the 1990s uniparty consenus. Bernie lost primary battles but his heirs likely win the war. Trump is the President. Both took on a dead consensus on economic liberalism & dumb wars. Only social issues remain.
Much punditry & commentary does not know it is dead yet. When the Boomers and their subscriptions finish, legacy media collapses. No one under 50 knows who a George Will or Maureen Dowd is let alone cares what they think. Liberalism is a barren ideology & leaves no children.
The Right that emerges from this time will be more orientated to families & workers, not big business. Even in an age of mass suffrage, the Right has won most elections by addressing grievances whilst defending foundational structures. It loses when it leaves Bismarck for Hayek.

The #Coronavirus and its death toll - esp for people who lost their loved ones without being able to be with them & say final words - will leave massive scars that, for many, will never heal. The grief is hard enough but so many children will be affected, too
The societal cost of the pandemic - esp frayed social bonds - will take years to be repaid. Churches & Religious houses are one of the few - if not the only - places where everyone of all social strata/backgrounds/ages join together. Stopping their meeting has its costs, too
Was speaking yesterday in a discussion & I do not think political classes - whose pay banks reliably every 2 weeks, regardless of what happens outside the bubble - have any idea of the societal ruins that will have to be (re)built upon. No one who went through this will forget

The pursuit of General Flynn (whatever your view of him & his son per se) was the stuff of a Third World "Securitate" - except that the actual Stasi were never so stupid as to put this in writing in this way.
If the ploy to “casually slip that in” was OK for someone in the President's circle, one must assume this practice or much worse was the norm for the 'ordinary people'....this is policing from a John Le Carre novel but on the other side of the Iron Curtain
To reiterate a point I have made earlier in different cases: the whole point of the rule of law in the Anglo common law tradition is it also protects people who are unpopular & unfashionable from a Govt persecution that masquerades as a prosecution. Who guards the guards?
