/10. Even as we express solidarity with the Black Americans, lets remember Mohsin Sheikh, the young techie from Pune who was lynched on this day 6 years ago by right wing goons. This was the first lynching after BJP came to power.
#JusticeForMohsinShaikh
/10. His attackers circulated a msg after murder 'First Wicket Down'. It was like an ominous warning of horrors that were to unfold. It also showed something had changed in India post 2014. Killers were not afraid of the consequences & openly boasted it. #JusticeForMohsinShaikh
/10. Justice has eluded Mohsin's family. His father passed away, fighting for justice but not seeing it in his own life. Had his killers been brought to justice, we might not have seen the subsequent spate of lynchings of Akhlaq, Pehlu, Tabrez, etc. #JusticeForMohsinShaikh
/10. Mohsin's killers are out on bail. The rationale of the court in granting them bail was even more shocking. The Bombay High Court favoured bail for the killers as they were provoked by religion. #JusticeForMohsinShaikh
/10. To quote the shameful judgement, "The fault of deceased was only that he belonged to another religion. I consider this factor in favour of accused...it appears that in name of religion they were provoked&have committed murder." Absolutely shocking! #JusticeForMohsinShaikh
/10. Thankfully, the Supreme Court lambasted this reasoning some months later. But nonetheless, it reflected another disturbing trend in post 2014 India - institutions rationalizing even murder. #JusticeForMohsinShaikh
/10. Subversion of justice is not limited to this case alone. Subsequently, we have seen rallies in support of lynchers, ruling party openly felicitating lynchers, ministers garlanding those CONVICTED of murdering a Muslim man. Media now a hate factory. #JusticeForMohsinShaikh
/10. In 2018, in a landmark judgement, the SC asked the govt to make a law against mob lynching. The court said that everytime a man is lynched it is the Constitution that is lynched. But 2 yrs later, the govt shows no intent to implement the SC order? #JusticeForMohsinSheikh
/10. Will Mohsin be forgotten by the world and reduced to only a one day hashtag by us? What will we do beyond tweeting to ensure justice in this and every other case of lynching motivated by hate? We have to raise our voice against this hate everyday. #JusticeForMohsinShaikh
/10. The fight against hate is one of the most important fight today. We need to hold the govts accountable for its inaction on the SC order. Lastly, we need to pressurize the Maharashtra govt to ensure #JusticrForMohsinShaikh
