¿Les suena este ilustre marino español? ¿No? Pues en una acción singular les permitió a las 13 Colonias ganar la Guerra de Independencia de los Estados Unidos, reduciendo el ejército británico a 1/3 de sus efectivos. ¿No lo creen? Su nombre era José de Mazarredo y Salazar. Hilo. 
José de Mazarredo y Salazar, vasco de nacimiento, provenía de una eminente familia con tradición naval, y en 1759, a los catorce años, sentó plaza de guardiamarina en Cádiz. Dos años después, realizó su primera acción heróica en la Real Armada, a bordo del chambequín Andaluz.
En la noche del día 13 de abril del año de 1761, impidió que el buque se estrellase contra las Salinas de la Mata, y se dijo: "por sus acertadas disposiciones y por su firmeza en sostenerlas contra el dictamen de hombres prácticos en la mar, y por su osadía en...
... embarcarse de noche en medio de un fuerte temporal en un pequeño bote, a recoger la lancha perdida y ver de salvar el buque, logró al menos sacar a salvo toda la tripulación de trescientos hombres”. Hombre juicioso en tierra y mente brillante en la mar, ascendió rápidamente.
Participó en la expedición contra Argel de 1775 donde suyos fueron los planes de navegación, fondeo y desembarco de 20.000 hombres. Posteriormente, realizó levantamientos hidrográficos en la Península Ibérica, contribuyendo enormemente a la creación del "Atlas Marítimo".
Pero dirán: ¿qué tiene qué ver con la Independencia de los EE.UU.? Pues mucho, porque en 1780, siendo mayor general de la Real Armada, en la escuadra de don Luis de Córdova, ejecutó una atrevida maniobra, que todos consideraban no sólo imposible sino temeraria.
El día 9 de agosto, a la altura de las islas Azores, apresó un importante convoy británico de cincuenta y tres velas, con mercancías y víveres para el ejército británico en la lucha contra los independentistas norteamericanos, además de 3000 hombres que se dirigían a América.
Este cargamento llevaba 80.000 mosquetes y cañones, y más de un millón de libras esterlinas en oro y plata, que hubiera permitido a los ingleses triplicar el tamaño de su ejército, pasando de una relación de tropas de 1:1 entre independentistas e ingleses a una proporción de 3:1.
Este cargamento hubiera decantado la balanza muy a favor de Gran Bretaña en la guerra, y por ello la acción de Mazarredo debe ser considerada un hecho con significado decisivo en la guerra, permitiendo a los colonos luchar en igualdad de condiciones contra la metrópoli.
José de Mazarredo, a diferencia de Bernando de Gálvez, no ha recibido honores en este país, posiblemente por desconocimiento. Pero no cabe duda de que su maniobra temeraria impulsó definitivamente a los Estados Unidos de América a la victoria en su Guerra de Independencia.

On August 9th, at the latitude of the Azores islands, an important British convoy of fifty-three sails was seized, with goods and provisions for the British army in the fight against the american independence, in addition to 3,000 soldiers who were heading to America.
This shipment carried 80,000 muskets and cannons, and more than a million sterling pounds in gold and silver, which would have allowed the English to triple the size of their army, going from a 1:1 troop ratio between independence and English to a 3:1 ratio.
