For #ShutDownSTEM and #ShutDownAcademia, I want to pause and raise up black voices. This is a thread of books for those who want to read, podcasts for those who can listen, and video creators for those who can watch and learn about black experiences in academia. #BLMUK #BLM 1/n
Think systemic racism is only as problem in the US? Britain is the king of racism and we're better at pretending we're not. "Why I'm no longer talking to white people about race" is a difficult and frank read about racism in the UK. 2/n bit.ly/3dRqT3N
Being not-a-racist is not enough. "How to be an antiracist" goes beyond this and transforms understanding into action to actively oppose existing systems and prejudices bit.ly/3dSifSL 3/n
This is the read for me - with a physics and astronomy focus (my background) and with lots of graphs and data, I can't recommend the (free!!) paper from the American Institute of Physics enough! aip.org/sites/default/… 4/n
My last reading recommendation (though I need to read this, too) is "weapons of math destruction" - a data driven way of showing how even maths can be racist bookshop.org/books/weapons-… 5/n
But books are expensive and I don't have time/energy to read!! How about podcasts? The Cite Black Women podcast have one big message - Cite Black Women. Their podcast is so informative and important citeblackwomencollective.org/our-podcast.ht… 6/n
Coming in with the UK focus again, "Black Gals Livin'" podcast talk about mental health, pop culture and is a very approachable podcast soundcloud.com/blackgalslivin 7/n
Nine 30 minute episodes from two years ago have so much relevance now. Gripping and informative, I can't recommend About Race with Renni Eddo-Lodge (writer of my first book recommendation) aboutracepodcast.com 8/n
And for a my last poddy recommendation I am going to start listening to Code Switch by NPR for a deeper dive into race issues npr.org/podcasts/51031… 9/n
And my other recommendations! Black (video) creators! So I mostly make science/educational content so I can mostly only recommend STEM creators, but there are loads (far more than the four I will recommend here!) 10/n
What about @freshprofessor who makes chemistry videos (apart from they're dope) bit.ly/30pdTPb 11/n
And @Zakkie_M who studies in Durban South Africa and has a new channel where she shares stories about her research into HIV Aids youtube.com/channel/UC4q2D… 12/n
Less STEM focused but still super educational is Savage Books @BooksSavage is a really really good channel with useful writing tips and video essays on pop culture youtube.com/channel/UCXyVz… 13/n
And my last recommendation but by no means the least is an up-and-coming channel which embodies everything I'm trying to do in this tweet - raise unheard and overlooked voices in STEM. That's of course @EstOdek and her channel "STEM uncovered" youtube.com/channel/UCO8fH… 14/n
The conversation doesn't end here. Obviously there are thousands of voices, I only selected a few in these forms. Actually pause and listen. Please add, share, comment but most of all listen, because #BlackLivesMatter 15/15
