And remember this is one reason why we advocate for police and prison abolition. California has used incarcerated fire crews since the 40s and saves $100 million per year by using their labor. Our system criminalizes and imprisons people in order to use them as slave labor.
This is how the system works, how it was designed to work. The US never bothered to figure out how to make our economy function without slave labor, we just use the prison system now to make it legal. All of this has to end.
