NEW @IpsosMORI / Evening Standard

- Starmer holds best net satisfaction scores for a leader of the opposition since Blair

- But Johnson still holds narrow lead over Starmer on 'most capable PM'

Context important - read on for more...
Here are the scores broken out in detail (gaps mean don't know):

- Starmer scores almost the same as Blair's best ever

- Cameron has similar numbers satisfied but more dissatisfied

- Other leaders that don't become PM tend to peak early with high DKs and then fall later
Despite sky high ratings for Starmer, Johnson still holds a lead when Brits are asked who would make the 'most capable PM?'...

Johnson 43%
Starmer 38%
Neither/DK 19%

But gap of 5 smaller than the 14 we saw before the election ...

Dec 19
Johnson 43%
Corbyn 29%
Neither/DK 28%
And voting intention figures tell a similar story - Tory lead at 5 (down from +22 in March)

Con 43% (-9)
Lab 38% (+8)
Lib Dem 10 (+1)
SNP 4% (-1)
Green 3% (-1)

Note that VI the same as most capable PM scores (though it is a bit of a coincidence and not always the same people)
So how do we explain Starmer ratings being so high yet Johnson leads? Well, Johnson is not Major or Brown.

Here are the opposition leader net ratings compared to the PM at the time...

Dec 94
Blair +31
Major -56

Apr 09
Cameron +23
Brown -28

Jun 19
Starmer +31
Johnson -1
And similarly Johnson's government is nowhere near as unpopular as Major and Brown's were at the time either.

Net govt satisfaction rating

- Dec 94 Major govt -78
- Apr 09 Brown govt -47

- Jun 19 Johnson govt -11

So a similar story.
So what do we learn?

- Very impressive scores for Starmer. In public opinion terms Labour have gone from the least popular opposition leader ever to (almost) the most!

- But Labour doesn't lead because Johnson & his govt not as unpopular as Major(s) and Brown(s) were
More - including sky high ratings for Sunak on coronavirus again despite 69% of Brits saying the economy will get worse in the next 12 months - plus tables to follow
