#Academics--It's so important to share our research w/ the world outside the ivory tower. Since I started studying friendship, I've learned a lot about how to do this & have been featured in NY Times, Vice, Telegraph +

Here's my advice:

#AcademicTwitter #AcademicChatter
1. Start by signing up for "HARO" Help a Reporter Out; you'll get emails from journalists looking from sources and you can weigh in when someone is looking for your area of expertise.
2. Start pitching op-eds based on your research. I pitched Psychology Today and know many psychologists have been successful with PT. Here's some more info on pitching: theopedproject.org/oped-basics
3. Create a baller website. THIS IS KEY. Don't just create one on your own if you aren't an expert.

After I invested money into my website, journalists started to reach out to me every week or two. I paid someone on Upwork to do mine: drmarisagfranco.com
4. The more your website is linked to by other outlets, the higher it'll come up on google search. All my Psychology Today articles link to my website, so the more I post there, the better my website does.
5. When you are a source for a journalist, ask them to link back to your website. Tell them that you'd be willing to serve as a source in the future.
6. Post your research on social media and explain the results in laymen's terms. Get a professional Instagram, if you don't have one, and post there too.
7. Pitch to podcasts, which usually involves emailing podcasts hosts and letting them know what you'll talk about and why it'll dazzle their audiences.
8. The media isn't just going to ask you to explain the research. They'll want your advice on what to do on behalf of it.

This may be uncomfortable for us, but consider that you're probably the person best poised to figure this out. Think more about research implications.
9. I know this is a lot of work, but once you do it for a while, people will start reaching out to you and the ball will move without you pushing it. It's also deeply gratifying.
