(1) If you can smell it, can you catch it?

You all know the foul smell of sewer gas that may enter your home when working on a 'P' trap or toilet.

We now know that city sewers contain viable #COVID19 from the feces of infected people. We also know it can spread as an aerosol.
(2) What you may not know is that there was a SARS-CoV-1 Super-Spreader Case involving this method of transmission within the Hong Kong Amoy Gardens apartment complex. It was the largest outbreak in Hong Kong.

(3) Poorer neighborhoods in the NYC Boroughs are fertile ground for this type of transmission: old, crowded apartment buildings with old plumbing and a shortage of toilet paper.
(4) NYC's sewer contamination is further exacerbated by its Combined Sewer and Stormwater System.

Due to its age the NYC's sewers use a common set of pipes for Sewage and Stormwater. When it rains there are Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) discharges into local waterways.
(5) Due to the influence of wealth, the larger Tier 1 Combined Sewer Overflow locations are preferentially located in the poorer parts of town (red dots on left, below). Manhattan and the river coasts of Brooklyn avoid this insult.
(6) It may appear like Staten Island doesn't have CSO discharges, but that is not so. It just falls under a different jurisdiction that is shared with New Jersey.

The north end is full of CSO discharges; the south end empties into the notorious Raritan and Sandy Hook bays.
(7) Three rainstorms hit Laguardia from 3/19 to 3/29. The first two accumulated over an inch; All led to CSO discharges.

Over 1 billion gallons/yr of untreated sewage & street runoff are discharged into the stagnant waters of Newtown Creek, the Brooklyn/Queens waterway border.
(8) There's a hot spot just south of Riker's Island.

As we look closer we find its Long Beach Township.

Just north, near the park, is a Combined Sewer Overflow discharge estimated to release 527 million gallons per year. Its weir is breached at 0.15 inches daily rainfall.
(9) There's a lot you can do to protect yourselves from the dangers of #coronavirus aerosols and films in sewer gas and water right now!

Team up and attend to your building's plumbing problems right now.

Find out where nearby CSOs lurk and help everyone avoid them.
(10) In the longer term, demand improvements to the NYC Combined Sewer and Stormwater System (See how Tokyo did it below).

In the short run, protect yourself, your family and your neighbors.
(11) Call to action:

I have been unable to get media attention for these problems. If you have an influential following and feel this information is important, please retweet it.

Thank you for your consideration.
