This video contains falsified scenes of Turkey’s Operation #ClawEagle.

Turkey’s Ministry of Defence tweeted this video, claiming that it shows first images of the military operation targeting PKK forces in northern #Iraq.

We reviewed the video and it is inaccurate.

The video is a compilation of doctored footage and archive material, filmed in contexts unrelated to Operation #ClawEagle.

The first section of footage we examined is this sequence, which can be seen from 00:23-00:29 in the Ministry of National Defence’s video.
This footage was originally published by Ismail Demir, President of Defence Industries, on May 8, 2020.

The original clip shows a computer simulation of new planes added to the Ministry of National Defence’s inventory.

In the footage published by Turkey’s Ministry of National Defence, a green filter appears to have been added to the footage to give it the appearance of authentic nighttime footage.
The sequence that immediately follows - 00:29-00:46 in the Ministry of National Defence’s footage - is also unrelated to Operation #ClawEagle.
This video clip frequently circulates on Turkish-language social media, with different contexts assigned to it each time it resurfaces.

The clip was shared as recently as February 29, 2020, with claims that it shows Turkish F-16s in the skies over Syria.

Before that, it was shared on October 10, 2019.

In this version of events, the planes are setting off to take part in Operation Peace Spring - a 2019 Turkish military offensive into northeast Syria.

And before that, it appeared on Twitter on April 1, 2018, alleging to depict another operation against the PKK in northern Iraq.

We could not fully verify the accuracy of the aerial scenes in the video depicting a target being hit.

We had already identified falsified scenes, meaning the entire validity of the video was questionable.
While it was possible to geolocate the aerial scenes to Sinjar mountains, it was not possible to confirm that the footage was filmed during last night’s operation in the area.
