THREAD
1/ Sharing our new piece in @HarvardBiz-- the title really says it all:

**we need better masks**

We need masks w/ better filtration, fit, comfort, scalability, reusability, and style- at a population scale, now.

2/ We have been saying this since April, when there was still academic debate about whether there should even be universal masking.

American exceptionalism, among other forces, has caused US to waste crucial time when we could have been manufacturing.

3/ While testing/tracing must happen & are critical pillars of any epidemic response, we have proven that in the US, doing this at scale is going to require dedication/resources/$ that we have *failed* to mobilize quickly.

In the short run, better masks are attainable.
4/ With the immense manufacturing capacity in this country, telling the American people to cut some cloth for DIY masks is unacceptable.

Masks are most important:
-indoors

-in crowds

-for and when around high risk individuals

-if you have had any known #covid19 exposure
5/ Masking will entail more than just providing masks.

People also need to wear them, *especially* during high-risk situations.

If you are walking around outside on your own, I personally would say that is a great time to get some mask-less fresh air.
6/ We have increasing evidence from high-risk scenarios that should likely have resulted in secondary transmission that did not; masks were used.

The Missouri barber shop is one such example.

7/ Masking has many functions:

-protecting the wearer

-preventing the wearer from transmitting to others

-reminding people to social distance

-allowing us to re-start the economy/ get back to work

-allowing people to feel safer
8/ Mandates on masking is complex (need to protect Black + Latinx communities who are at higher risk of discrimination)

@Health_Affairs --> "Estimates suggest as many as 230,000–450,000 COVID-19 cases possibly averted by May 22, 2020 by these mandates"
