The majority (69%) of the Morrison Ministry has a degree from the humanities, social sciences, law, and/or business. That is 16 out of 23 Ministry members. If they want to call themselves 'irrelevant' and 'not ready for their jobs' I won't argue #auspol
In the past few months I have had the responsibility (and privilege) of educating 120+ human beings. They are future professionals, teachers, policymakers, diplomats, human rights lawyers, journalists, researchers, leaders. But to the government, my work is 'irrelevant' #auspol
...Their degrees, education, and future careers are 'irrelevant' . The Morrison et al rhetoric has been dehumanizing. Young people are not complex human beings. They are just jobs in training. Not people with bright futures and aspirations, just upcoming jobs figures #auspol
This will disproportionately affect those who were already almost priced out of uni to begin with. Indigenous and Aboriginal students, single parents and carers, women, students with disabilities, mature students. Anyone who didn't grow up in a 6-figure income household #auspol
This will bankrupt Humanities and Social Sciences faculties. Degrees will be less diverse. Less options for majors, minors, and sub-disciplines. Disciplines that are already being targeted will be gutted first: Indigenous Studies, Gender Studies, STS/HPS, etc #auspol
Students won't have all of these magical choices, Tehan. Faculties will not run these subjects precisely because they won't have enough enrollments. You can't complete a major that your university won't even offer. This is removing choices from future students #auspol #NPC
Tehan says the logic of this is to encourage students to do cross-faculty majors, and cross-faculty double degrees. Where is the incentive for a student to do two degrees (teaching + history) if one of them doubles in price? Does he even know how degrees work? #auspol #NPC
Humanities may end up as ‘subsidiaries’ of STEM faculties. Restructured so that the subjects offered are those that can become ad hoc electives for STEM students. This will reduce the academic rigour of HASS subjects because they will cater to ‘one-time visitor’ students #auspol
