Let’s talk about... Lube

I’m writing a comprehensive guide to anal, and i realised that lube is often a mystery to people- so it’s ideal for an LTA!
For once, this is mostly FACT, with the occasional opinion.
There are three main types of lube you can buy:
Silicone-based
Water-based
Oil-based

You’ll also find “hybrid” lube which is both water- and silicone-based. “Organic” or “Natural” lube is usually water-based.
Lube is always useful to have- although the vagina is often self-lubricating, any number of reasons (including the time of the month) can cause it to need a little help. And you ALWAYS need lube for anal, the ass doesn’t self-lubricate at all. Don’t feel ashamed to need lube!
On top of that, you may have heard the phrase “the wetter the better”, and that’s a perfectly good maxim! Lube will reduce friction and generally make sex far more pleasurable- yes, even solo sex.
The type of lube you need will depend on what you’re going to do, so here’s a quick run-down.
You should always bear in mind allergies and whether or not you’ll be using condoms or sex toys with the lube; read on to find out why...
Oil-based lube
This is the least popular type of lube.
Oil will degrade condoms, so never use them together. There’s a higher chance of a yeast infection when using oil too, and it can stain your bed linen. It’s also a bugger to wash off/out.
The only plus side to oil as a lube is that it lasts the longest. Ultimately it’s better than nothing, but it has lots of downsides.
Silicone-based lube
This is a great option for most cases- it’s long-lasting and doesn’t get washed away as easily as water lube (use soap to wash off), so it’s great for shower sex and anal. It’s safe for use with condoms too, and is least likely to cause an allergic reaction.
The only downside to silicone lubes is that it can degrade silicone sex toys over time- wash it off quickly if it does come into contact with a silicone toy and you should be ok. Some silicone lube can stain, but hopefully you’re washing your sheets anyway😉
Water-based lube
This is the safest lube- it won’t damage condoms or sex toys, and it washes out easily. However, it wears off quickly so needs to be reapplied regularly and can get sticky, and is useless for shower sex for the same reason. It shouldn’t stain.
So that’s the main overview. You’ll see some lubes sold as “pleasure enhancing” with cooling, tingling or numbing properties- be careful, as these often contain additives that may cause infections.
Using lube with sex toys
As far as I know, all condoms come with lube already applied, but if you’ve been paying attention, you’ll know that water-based lube is best for sex toys- so how do you know what condoms use water-based lube?
It’s actually pretty hard to figure out as manufacturers don’t seem to state what sort of lube they use, however I’ve found this article which I always refer to:
condomdepot.com/condom-informa…
So to sum up:
- oil-based lube is best avoided
- silicone-based lube is long lasting, condom safe, great in the shower and perfect for anal, but bad for silicone toys
- water-based lube is condom and toy safe but wears out quickly
- lube is awesome!
