I’m writing a comprehensive guide to anal, and i realised that lube is often a mystery to people- so it’s ideal for an LTA!
For once, this is mostly FACT, with the occasional opinion.
Silicone-based
Water-based
Oil-based
You’ll also find “hybrid” lube which is both water- and silicone-based. “Organic” or “Natural” lube is usually water-based.
You should always bear in mind allergies and whether or not you’ll be using condoms or sex toys with the lube; read on to find out why...
This is the least popular type of lube.
Oil will degrade condoms, so never use them together. There’s a higher chance of a yeast infection when using oil too, and it can stain your bed linen. It’s also a bugger to wash off/out.
This is a great option for most cases- it’s long-lasting and doesn’t get washed away as easily as water lube (use soap to wash off), so it’s great for shower sex and anal. It’s safe for use with condoms too, and is least likely to cause an allergic reaction.
This is the safest lube- it won’t damage condoms or sex toys, and it washes out easily. However, it wears off quickly so needs to be reapplied regularly and can get sticky, and is useless for shower sex for the same reason. It shouldn’t stain.
As far as I know, all condoms come with lube already applied, but if you’ve been paying attention, you’ll know that water-based lube is best for sex toys- so how do you know what condoms use water-based lube?

- oil-based lube is best avoided
- silicone-based lube is long lasting, condom safe, great in the shower and perfect for anal, but bad for silicone toys
- water-based lube is condom and toy safe but wears out quickly
- lube is awesome!
