1/ Bursting bubbles, a short thread on infection control in primary schools
Gov abandoned the idea of getting all primary students back before summer, then changed their minds.
Lots of heads have taken a sensible approach, lots also arent
2/ So these are messages I recieved today (anonymised of course) main issue here is extra cleaning, risk assessments etc havent been considered which will be called for.
3/ Here we have no consultation with staff, and as with the case above, staff moving across bubbles which shouldnt be the case as this means the staff could become a vector between groups.
4/ All guidence going out the window here as well. It's also the fact this is done with little chance for additional planning.
5/ Here we go again, mixing staff across bubbles. All these example are probably within around a 15 mile radius. Yes the union is on the case for all of these, there are some very busy Secretaries around the country
6/ DfE guidence isnt great but it's better than nothing, but for some schools it almost seems like a competition to get as many students back and to help with safety measures. One school claimed LA and PHE advised bubbles could be mixed but wont show the evidence of this
7/ I know of undue pressure being put on some heads by forces above to up student numbers, i appreciate the importance of education but this needs to be done without forgetting about safety.
8/ Secondary schools, anyone else finding lots of support staff being asked in for extra days without any real purpose for them being in the buildings?
Extra staff's usually welcome but not at a time when reducing numbers an important method of infection control.
9/ Staff briefings, I don't care how big a staff room is 30 members of staff in an unventilated room for 20-30 minutes is not acceptable practice, if one member of staff tests positive won't all staff have to isolate?
10/ Update: Tuesday's problems
One issue is that DfE guidence puts responsibility for infection fully onto schools wiping the govs hands of any outbreaks. Due to this we are now getting cover ups or heads in sand.
11/ If this happens collectivise and go to governors/LA, contact Branch Secretary, contact PHE or report to the HSE on their emergency hotline. Do not do nothing! If there are no other choices prepare to use Section 44 of Employment Rights Act 1996.
